1 Installing the software
a. Copy the software into C:/Program Files
b. Double click to install
c. When opening software for the first time, set
Primary default settings
- Choose perspective mode
- Choose metric centimeters
d. In the SketchUp window,
- Press View Menu.... Toolbars
- Deselect Getting Started
- Select Large Tool Set
- Select Standard
2 To begin each Sketch
Erase “man” by using the Eraser Tool, or
Select with Select Tool and press Delete
In Camera Menu, select Parallel Projection
3 To make a cuboid:
a. Use the Rectangle Tool to draw a rectangle from
the origin of the axes.
b. Use the Push/Pull Tool to raise the rectangle into a
cuboid.
4 To make a step block:
a. Use the Pencil Tool to draw a line from the
midpoint of one top edge to the midpoint of the
opposite top edge.
b. Use the Push/Pull Tool to raise or lower the step.
5 To make a trapezoidal prism:
Draw a cuboid
b. Use the Move/Copy Tool and place it on top front
edge of cuboid. Edge will become blue line.
c. Click and drag inwards/outwards.
6 To make a pyramid:
a. Draw a rectangle from the origin.
b. Use the Pencil Tool to draw a diagonal on the
rectangle.
c. Use the Pencil Tool to draw a line from an adjacent
corner to the midpoint (centre of rectangle) on the
diagonal line. Click and continue to draw another
line from the centre to the opposite corner.
d. Place the Move/Copy Tool on the centre point of
the rectangle, click and move upwards to form the
pyramid.

7 To make a cylinder:
a. Use the Circle Tool to draw a circle from the origin
as the centre of the circle. Drag outwards.
b. Use the Push/Pull Tool to raise the circle into a
cylinder.
8 To make a cone:
a. Make a cylinder.
b. Use the Move/Copy Tool and place the icon on the
upper edge of the cylinder. The edge is blue in
colour.
c. Move the icon along the edge until it turns black.
d. Click and drag towards the centre of the circular top
9 To make a semi-cylinder:
a. Draw a circle from the origin.
b. Use the Pencil Tool to cut the circle in half through
the centre of the circle.
c. Use the Selection Tool to select the unwanted half
of the circumference of the circle. Delete it off.
d. Use the Push/Pull Tool to raise the remaining half
circle to form a half cylinder.
10 To make a pentagonal prism:
a. Select the Polygon Tool.
b. Look at bottom right corner of computer screen.
Enter the number of sides(5) of the required
polygon. Press ENTER.
c. Draw a pentagon from the origin of the axes.
d. Use the Push/Pull Tool to raise the solid prism.
11 To make a pentagonal pyramid:
a. Use the Pencil Tool to draw 5 lines from the centre
of the top face to the 5 corners of the bottom face of
the pentagonal prism.
b. Use the Eraser Tool to erase the outer lines and
faces.

12 To make a sphere:
a. Draw a circle at the origin.
b. Use the Selection Tool to select the circle.
c. Use the Move/Copy Tool. Place icon on circle.
d. Press CTRL and click to copy the circle. Drag new
circle to the top.
e. Use Rotation Tool to rotate the upper circle at 90o
to the lower circle.
- Bring the Rotation Tool to the centre of the upper
circle. Click at the centre until a protractor appears.
Turn the protractor in the plane that you require.
Then click on the edge of the upper circle, drag
cursor to new plane and click again.
f. You may need to use the Orbit Tool to turn the
drawing so that you can see the full rotated circle.
g. Use the Selection Tool to select the lower circle.
h. Use the Follow Me Tool and click on the upper
circle to make a sphere.
i. To form the earth sphere which shows the lines of
longitude and latitude, open the View menu and
select Hidden Geometry.
j. Use the Selection Tool to select ‘pieces’ of the
surface to delete, then use the Line Tool to draw a
line joining the north pole to the south pole. The
sphere looks as if a slice of it has been removed.

14 To view the combined objects from different angles:
a. Use the Orbit Tool to turn the object.
b. Go to Camera Menu, choose Standard View.
- Choose view from 6 different angles.
- ISO view brings object back into perspective
view.
