*Columbus was an Italian Sailor who wanted to

find a western sea route to Asia
- Italy wouldn’t pay for his trip so he
went to king Fernando and queen

- They were in the middle of
Recoquista and didn’t
respond for 6 years

*Columbus was ordered to bring all riches

back to Spain and claim any land he
discovered for Spain
- If he was successful they promised
he would become a viceroy or royal governor
of those lands

*Columbus set sail on Aug. 3 1492 in the

Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria
- 33 days later they spotted land

Columbus’s First Exploration

*Columbus landed in the Bahamas

- while searching the island

Hispanola he met the Taino people whom he
called Indians and enslaved many of them.

- He explored for 2 months

before deciding he had
enough riches to return to
Spain

Europe Learns of Columbus’s Voyage

*Columbus returns to Spain and is made an

admiral and governor,
Queens Isabella wanted to convert the Taino to
Christianity but Columbus just wanted to
enslave them

*Ferdinand asked Pope Alexander to create a

LINE OF DEMARCATION claiming that Spain
could claim ALL lands to the west of this line

- this angered Portugal who

wanted in on all of the
land- grabbing action

- The two countries

Compromised in the
TREATY OF TORDESILLA
which moved the line of
demarcation 800 miles west
