Question 3

Paragraph: Food groups

Write a 5 lines paragraph about what is in the food we eat: What is in processed food?

Many of the food we eat today are processed food; this means that they are not fresh food. They have
been changed in some ways, perhaps tinned or dried. Most processed foods have a number of added
ingredients. The manufacturers of processed food often add substances to the food. We call these
substances food additives. They include the following: common substances such as salt and sugar,
preservatives such as sodium benzoate to stop food going bad quickly, colorants such as tartrazine,
chemicals that improve the flavor of food called the flavourants e.g. monosodium glutamate (MSG) and
vitamins and minerals.

A one page Summary of the work from the resources:

A list of different sources was added such as different links to the contents of what has been outlined.
Links to different sources were included on the website. All the links were thoroughly researched and
assessed making sure they are relevant to the topic and has sufficient information and activities that
learners can do. The website is Life Orientation as a learning area, and the topic is based on Food
groups, their functions on the body and the examples of food containing each food group. In terms of
SKVA, the website is designed in such a way that it equips learners with skills, knowledge, values and
attitudes they might need on their learning journey. There are different sources gathered from internet
based on the topic, for an example different diet plans were found whereby learners could learn to
follow when following a healthy diet plan and that can help them to encourage their friends and family
members on how to follow a diet plan and the importance of following one. Each diet plan contains all
food groups discussed as nutrients needed by the body to perform at an optimum level. Learners are to
design and draft their own diet plan for seven days including all the nutrients needed by the body. The
other resources are based on outlining all typical examples of food found on each food group. The
examples of food pyramids whereby all food groups are identified and examples of food are identified
by way of showing pictures.
