THERMISTER CHARACTERISTICS

AIM: To draw the characteristic curves and determine the thermoelectric

coefficient of Thermistor.

APPARATUS: 5volts dc power supply, thermister, milliammeter, oven,

connecting wires, Thermometer.

FORMULA: thermo electric coefficient of thermister is

R1& R2 are the resistances at the temperature T1 &T2 respectivly.

THEORY: thermisters are semi conductors which act as temperature
sensitive devices and exhibit negative temperature coefficient of resistence
i.e, a resistance of thermister decreases as its temperature increased.
Commercial thermistors consist of sintered mixture of oxides
of Nio,Mn2o3 and Co2o3. as the temperature is increased, more charge
carriers are liberated which result in increased conductivity. The decrease in
the resistivity of a thermistor nearly follows an exponential curve with
temperature.
Thermistors find extensive application in thermometers in
measurement of microwave frequency power, as the thermal relay and in
control devices
By applying different set of input dc voltage say 5V, we can
observe the change in resistance of the thermister with temperature
PROCDURE:
1. Connect the circuit as shown.
2. Mount the thermometer in the socket provided on the front panel.
3. Keep dc voltage selector. Switch on 5V for the first set of reading.
4. Switch on the dc supply as well as oven, so that thermistorheats up
slowly.
5. Note down the few readings of the current following through thermistor
and the corresponding temperature in Cor F from thermometer
6. repeat above steps by keeping dc voltage to 5v and tabulate all the
readings.
7.calculate for the resistance of the thermister for each of the reading.
8.plot a graph between resistance of thermister Rt(on y-axis)and temperature
T(on x-axis)

CONCLUSION: resistance of thermister decreases(i.e,current through it

increases) as
The temperature increases. the decrease nearly follows on exponential curve.

RESULT: Thermoelectric coefficient of thermister is…………..
