Details of the Programme/Project/Initiative

Brief Description of the Programme/project/initiative:

Design project is part of the curriculum for the Chemical

Engineering program at Jabatan Kejuruteraan Kimia & Proses, FKAB,
UKM. It is conducted with the intention of providing the final year
students with a complete experience of a professional chemical
engineers working in the industry in the field of chemical plant
design. Since the course was started around late 70s, the content of
the course has always been based on cases found in text books.
Students in groups of 5 or 6, were required to conducted feasibility
study of a process plant design and to complete it with the final
detail design task. Since 2009, a different approach was adopted in
that current engineering problems in the industry in particular the
PETRONAS experience were made available as the problem statement in
the design course. PETRONAS engineers were invited to participate in
the problem formulations and were asked to give advice and comments
throughout the conduct of the course. The PETRONAS engineers were
also kind enough to provide special crash training on the use their
CAD tools develop by in-house. The final participation of the
industrial engineers is in the final evaluation of the design
project by the students.

Why Was the Project Started:

It was started as a response towards more requirements of industrial

participation in the teaching of engineering courses.

Objective:

The objective was to give real exposure to potential engineering

graduates and thus prepare them adequately for their carrier in
chemical engineering discipline.

Target Group:

The target group is the fourth or final year students.

Date from which the Project became Operational:

The date of commencement was since the first semester 1 of 2009/2010

Is the Project Still Operational:

The project approach is still operational but the scope and

variability of problems has been reduced to ensure enough time and
availability of reference materials for the students to complete
their design tasks.

10 points that make the Programme/Project Innovative:

1. It is a project that take into consideration real life

engineering problems and allows the students to explore
possible solutions.

2. The formulation of real industrial problems for the students

give them unique opportunities to try and solve real industrial
problems without having to be responsible for any untoward
repercussion.

3. Participation of the industrial engineers allows industrial

experience and expertise to be available to students of
engineering before they graduate and enter the industrial
market.

4.

List 5 acheivements of the programme/project?

1. Students have more exposure to real life engineering problems

2. Students are able to exercise their creativity in solving real

life engineering problems

3. Students have the opportunity to visit the problematic area in

the industry during the design course.

4. Some proprietary material such as the PDF and P&ID documents

for the private company were able made available to the
students as the company engineers were also involve during the
course of the design projects.

List the 5 key challenges faced while implementing the

programme/project/initiative and how they were overcome?

1. To organize students visit to the plant or site under

consideration. Special care has to be taken not the disclose
any non-disclosure materials.

2. To ensure that all relevant reference material are available or

easily assessable to the students. Problems unavailable data
such as kinetic information for the possible chemical routes
are not available and encouraging the students to make educated
assumption and judgment.

3. To get the students to be more comfortable to ask useful

questions to the invited engineers.

4. To convince the industrial engineering to give their time and

expertise for the engineering course.

5. To meet the dateline set by the design course which is 2

semesters

List the 5 points how the programme/project/initiative serve as a model

that can be replicated or adapted by others?

1. To develop a good collaboration with a particular chemical

industry

2. To convince those engineers involve in technical works to be

willing to participate and spare their time for the teaching of
engineering courses.

3. To get the company high level management to agree on the

participation of their engineers in the teaching program.

4. To provide space and opportunities for industrial engineers to

participate in teaching of engineering courses.

List 5 points to elaborate on the scalability of the

programme/project/initiative:
1. Other subjects which are relevant to industrial needs besides
design field such as safety course should also involve
industrial people.

2. Subject that teach or describe chemical process units would be

more realistic or up to date if there is participation of the
industrial people. This should be just from operational plant
but also the engineering sales forces.
