INTRODUCTORY TASKS
Period 1

Activity 1:
Students have opportunity to revise and remember by completing the following:

a + a = 2a
a x a = a²
axaxa=a3
axaxaxaxa=a5

a3 + a 5 = Cannot simplify
a 3 x a5 =a 8
So: a 3 x a 5 = a (3+5)

(a 2)3 = ?????
a2xa2xa2=a6
(a3) 5 = ??????
a 3 x a3 x a3 x a3 x a3 = a (3+3+3+3+3)
= a 15
So really: (a 3) 5 = a (3x5)
= a 15

Are you confused? Good!!!

Try these:

Activity 2:
Students find the HCF for two numbers:

Remember:
Activity 3:

Example 1:
24a + 6 = 6 ( 4a + 1)
Step 1: HCF is 6
Step 2: Open brackets and put the number which multiply with the HCF and close brackets
Step 3: Check the integers signs
Step 4: Always expand it to confirm answers

1.c 4m+16 =
2.c 4m+20 =
3.c a+18 =
4.c 15m+12=
5.c -5x +10 =
6.c abc + abcd =
7.c -36abc + 6b² =
