PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION

OF ZnO DOPED WITH Dysprosium

NAME :ANAND KUMAR.G

GUIDED BY :Dr. V.PONNUSAMY

Abstract

• ZnO has been prepared by a solution method

at low temperature(40-90◦C)

• Then the product has been characterized by

Scanning electron microscope and UV-vis
spectroscopy.
• The microstructure of ZnO can be tuned by
varying the growth temperature and
crystallization condition.
Properties of ZnO
Zinc oxide is an inorganic compound.

• It usually appears as a white powder, nearly

insoluble in water.

• ZnO is a II-VI semiconductor.(Direct Band gap)

It has several favorable properties:

• good transparency,

• high electron mobility,

• wide band gap,

• strong room-temperature luminescence, etc.

• Appearance White solid

• Density 5.606 g/cm3

• Band gap 3.3 eV (direct)

• Refractive index 2.0041

Crystal structure

• Zinc oxide crystallizes in three forms:

1.hexagonal wurtzite,
2.cubic zincblende,
3.cubic rocksalt(rare).
Preparation
• Aqueous solution of 100ml of NaOH (1 mol/L)
and 100ml of ZnCl2(0.5mol/L)are prepared.

• Then solution of Dysprosium is added to the

mixture into a flask.

• The flask is maintained at 60 ◦ C in a water bath

for 3 hours under stirring condition.
• After reaction, the solution was allowed to
cool to room temperature.

• The white precipitates were separated,

washed with deionized water thrice, and dried
at 60 ◦ C
