Session 3: Instructional

Design
Development of CAI Materials
May 17-21, 2010

Conducted by:
NEAP XI staff
Objectives:
• Define instructional design.
• Discuss the different models of
instructional design.
• Explain the learning theories in
relation
to instructional design.
• Design the instruction for a chosen
topic.
SKYSCRAPERS
These refer to very high structures particularly
buildings. High technology engineering coupled with
modern architecture has made construction of sky high
buildings possible. Record holder structures are found
everywhere, and it has become one of the significant
indicators of progress, a country’s landmark with great
significance. They are usually occupied as business offices
of just one big international corporation, a conglomerate or
a joint investment of corporate giants; or they house
various government offices or regional head offices of
various companies who have businesses in major parts of
the world, like Hong Kong for the Asia-Pacific.
Here are four of these skyscrapers that have earned
their titles as “World’s Tallest Buildings” : Taipei 101
(Taiwan), 508 meters, 101 floors; Petronas Towers
Activity 1 (10 minutes)
a) Present the given information in such a
way
that it will be easy to understand and
more interesting to the learners.
b) You mau use your laptop in doing this
task.
c) You can access the internet to find more
resources that will supplement the
information
given.
Questions:
• How did you come up with your
presentation?
• What are the things you have
considered
in coming up with your
presentation?
• Comparing all presentations, which
one is
easy to understand and more

Instructional Design
• "The implementation of procedures and techniques
to
modify human capabilities through instruction."
(Mager)
• "The application of sound/proven instructional
principles to
the development and delivery of information and
activities
that are created to facilitate the attainment of
intended,
specific learning goals." (Smith)

Instructional Design
Models
• frameworks for developing modules or
lessons that
increase and/or enhance the possibility of
learning,
and encourage the engagement of learners
so that
they learn faster and gain deeper levels of
understanding

• guidelines or sets of strategies on which the

approaches to teaching by instructors are
based
Instructional Design Theory
• the study of how to best design instruction
so that
learning will take place. ID theory, then, is
drawn from
learning theory - the study of how people
learn
(Smith, 1984).
• provides guidance in the selection and use of
instructional methods in order to achieve a
desired
learning outcome.
Activity 2 (15 minutes)
• Read the article about the ID Model
which will
be given to you.
• Using your laptop, design a
presentation about
the information that you have
gathered from
the article.
• Please consider a self-learning material

Questions:
• What are the advantages and
disadvantages of
each model?
• What are the common features of the 4
models?
•Which one is adaptable in your own
situation?
Why?
•Is there a possiblity of combining the 4
Tips in Instructional Design
• Cut the text by 50%.
• It should be conversational (address the
learner as “you” and the material as “I”.
• Material should be talking to the
learners.
• Capture the classroom situation
(include ‘greetings).
• You may use the 4As or the 5Es.

Application:
• Revisit the models being presented.
• Decide for yourself which of these
models
you are going to use.
• You can also combine these models
whenever it is applicable and best
useful in
your end.
Workshop 2
• Choose a topic to be developed.
• Organize this topic into several lessons.
• Write the content of this topic in
lesson. You
may use form following the
4As/5Es/etc.
• Design the instruction of these lessons
for a
self-learning material.
