Equilibrium - Disequilibrium - New equilibrium

Tzetvan Todorov

Narratives tend to have three sections: Equilibrium (establishing the scene/ situation); Disequilibrium (a phase where the scene/ situation changes because of an event); New equilibrium (the disequilibrium is resolved, and a new normal is created).

Open texts and Closed texts Texts are made up of threads of meaning. Some texts open their meanings up, with the threads pointing in all sorts of directions at the end, encouraging the reader/ audience to make their meanings. These are Open Texts/ Writerly Texts. Closed texts (also called Readerly Texts) are less ambiguous, constructing a clear, definite and closed meaning.

Roland Barthes

Enigma Code and Action Code Narratives are constructed through 5 codes that move the story along or construct our understanding of events. These include the Enigma Code (where there is a question/ mystery that the audience wants to see solved/ answered) and the Action code (where there is an event/ moment that moves the story along, like a catalyst for events).

Binary opposition is a structural system that is fundamental and central to all aspects of human understanding, and as such underpins the stories we create. Our narratives are structured around binary opposition.
