When the verb ends in e it adds only d. When the verb ends in y preceeded by a consonant y i + ed But when the verb ends in y preceeded by a vowel y + ed

When the verb ends in one consonant, preceeded by only one stressed vowel, it doubles the consonant before it adds -ed. But when the last vowel is not stressed, it only adds ed. 'open (abrir) opened 'listen (escuchar) listened 'visit (visitar) visited
