Chisel

Aim: To make a chisel from a given rod by forging. Tools required: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Sledge hammer Flatter Round bit tong Flat tong Square tong Pick up tong

Material required; 12mm M.S. rod, coal Equipment required: 1. Blacksmith forge with blower 2. Anvil 3. Swage block Sequence of operations: 1. Heating rod up to red hot state 2. Drawing 3. Flattering 4. Fullering 5. Cooling Procedure: 1. The round rod is heated to red hot state so that it can be deformed plastically with less effort by hammering. 2. The work is laid on the flat face of the Anvil using the tongs and stretched by hammering.

Rotate the work through 900 and hammered, this process is repeated till the work piece is in the shape of the chisel.

4. Fullering is done at one end of the work piece.

5. After completion of Fullering and flattering operations the work piece is allowed to cool. Precautions: 1. Forging must be done only when work piece is in red hot condition. 2. Use the correct size tongs to hold the work piece, other wise it may slip causing injuries. 3. Hold the hot piece downwards close to the ground while transferring from Anvil to minimize danger of burns from accidents. Result: The shape of chisel is made as per the dimensions.
