WRITING REPORT ON JOB-SHEET

Study the following description carefully

Drawing down a circular bar to a square taper

A black mild steel bar of particular dimensions has to be drawn down to a

square taper. The tools required are anvil, tongs and a ball-pein hammer.
Throughout the operation the end which is being forged must be kept at a bright
red heat. The procedure is as follow. The circular bar is gripped with the tongs.
One face is forged flat and to a short taper. The component is rotated through 180o
and the opposite face is forged flat and to a short taper. The work is turned
through 90o and the above operation is repeated. The end is drawn down to the
required length. It is important to keep the faces square during the operations. The
result is a circular bar with a square taper at one end.

The above description can also be expressed as a set of instructions on an operations

sheet (or work-sheet). Give title (job title), tools and material required in the operation.
In the description the purpose of the operation is repeated at the end as a statement of its
result. In the instructions it is not necessary to state the result, because this is clearly seen
in the diagrams. Also, in the instructions we often omit
(i) The definite and the indefinite articles (i.e. the, a, an)
(ii) Relative pronouns (i.e. which, that)
(iii) Some parts of the verb to be (i.e. is, are)

We use only those words which are necessary to give the essential information, as in a
telegram.
1. Now write out and complete the operations sheet, giving only essential instructions
based on the description above.

1. Write out operations sheets for each of the following description

A black mild steel square bar has to be drawn down to a circular taper. The tools
required are an anvil, vee-bit tongs and a ball-pein hammer. The end which is
being forged must be kept at a bright red heat throughout the operation. The
procedure is as follows. One end of the square bar is forged to a square taper. The
work is placed on the anvil face so that a corner of the tapered portion is touching
the anvil and the faces of the tapered portion are at 45 o to the top of the anvil. The
opposite faces are forged to produce an octagonal pyramid shape. All corners of
the bar are lightly hammered to produce a conical taper. The result is a square bar
drawn down to a circular taper, having a conical shape.

In order to manufacture a cold chisel, one piece octagonal bar 0f 0.8% high
carbon steel is required. The tools required are an anvil, a ball-pein hammer,
tongs, a quenching bath and an off-hand grinding machine. Throughout the
operation the bar is heated to a bright red. The procedure is as follows. The bar is
held at a slight angle on the anvil face. One face is drawn down to form a wedge
shape. The bar is turned through 180o and the opposite face is drawn down to a
wedge shape. The bar is reversed and a chamfer is forged on the striking end. The
bar is allowed to cool slowly and the cutting edge is roughly ground. The chisel is
then hardened and tempered. Finally, the cutting edge is finish-ground on the
grinding machine, and the cutting quality of the chisel tested on a mild steel block.
