Sonnet 116 Psychoanalysis Iambic Pentameter Theme: this ideal love is the only one really worth pursuing

because it is solid. y y y y y y When William Shakespeare was 18 years old, he married a 26 year old woman named Anne Hathaway. Anne Hathaway was already pregnant before they got married. To prevent a scandal, Willam s father, John Shakespeare, arranged a hasty marriage for them. They had 3 children: Susanna, Hamnet, and Judith. Hamnet and Juduth were twins, one boy and one girl; although, sadly, Hamnet died of unknown cause at age 11 1607: His eldest daughter, Susanna, was married to Dr. John Hall and they had their first daughter, Elizabeth Hall, on June 5, 1607 The Sonnet was published on the year of 1609.

The speaker of the poem can be Shakespeare himself speaking to the audience. It seems that Shakespeare is telling the readers that love is what he believes it to be, he is relating what he has learned from life to the readers. His love and marriage to Anne Hathaway may have been the emotion in this sonnet, maybe Shakespeare really loved Anne to the point that he made her pregnant even before marriage and risk the reputation of his family and Anne s. In the sonnet, William Shakespeare tells us that the marriage of true minds is not about legal marriage of the court, the marriage here is about how the love of two people can be bound forever by a deep connection, married or unmarried. The poem also depicts how love should always stand strong no matter what happens, it is invaluable, love should not be fade through time even if the lovers grow old, it never changes and it should last all throughout their life. In the last couplet of the sonnet, it can be depicted that Shakespeare is very certain of what love is, he is willing to stake his reputation as a poet that the love he talks about is the right one. There is a possibility that this sonnet was written for his daughter or son-in-law, it was only in 1609 that it was published, but it may not have been written on the same year. It is possible that William Shakespeare write this sonnet for his daughter to tell her that her love for her fianc should be strong and eternal, something like a father would say to his daughter when she is about to be married. http://www.william-shakespeare.info/william-shakespeare-anne-hathaway.htm
