Conductors
Conductors can generally be according to EN 60288: class 1 solid class 2 stranded class 5 flexible
Type of conductors are chosen according to electrical characteristics, required flexibility, type of connection systems or specific installation conditions, for example: in presence of vibration or movement or reduced bending radius is preferable class 5 flexible conductor, class 1 solid conductor is preferable for permanent installation, crimping termination, in presence of corrosive atmosphere, high temperature or to facilitate the soldering is preferable tinned conductor.
Cabling
Fire resistant cables generally can be laid-up in concentric construction and in pairs. Twisting is important to reduce noise in circuits and also the lay of twist in some constructions must be carefully considered.
Screening
Screens are often used in instrumentation cables to prevent or reduce possible interference in cables that can be caused by the following reasons: Cross-talk from adjacent pairs or triples; Interference induced by external source such as electrical equipments, machinery, power line. The most popular screen is: Aluminium/polyester tape with a tinned copper drain wire or earth conductor Following screens can also been used, when required: Copper/polyester tape with a tinned copper drain wire, for a better screen effect Bare copper braid for electromagnetic interference or when the cable is subject to movements
Aluminium/polyester or copper/polyester tapes normally have a total thickness from 25 to 100 m, according to standards and are wrapped with an overlap >125% to assure a full coverage even in case of bending. In continuous contact with metallic side there could be an earth tinned conductor, same cross section of the other cores, or a drain wire, normally tinned copper, 0.5 sqmm, stranded or solid, according to cable specifications. Copper braid normally has a coverage from 80% to 95%. This type of screen presents a lower electrical resistance, a very good protection also to electromagnetic noises and a higher mechanical resistance compared to aluminium/polyester tape. It is suitable for mobile applications.
Armouring
Metallic armour are used when cables have to be installed direct buried, or if mechanical protection is required. Following points must be considered: Required tensile load Expected pressure on cable during service Protection against rodent Protection against accidental damage Minimum required bending radius. SWA: single layer of galvanized steel wires, with diameters according to relevant standards, coverage min. 90%. This armour assures a very good mechanical protection and tensile strength. An additional counterspiral tape increases solidity, if required. GSWB: galvanized steel wire braid, diameter of wire: 0.20 - 0.25 - 0.30 - 0.40 mm, with coverage of >80%. It assures a good mechanical resistance, allowing a lower bending radius compared to other armour. It is preferable when there is movement or vibration. For special application is possible to use stainless steel, tinned copper or special alloy wires.
Sheath
To optimize the behaviour in case of fire, best sheath is made of LSZH (Lows Smoke Zero Halogen) materials since, thanks to that, fire would not be propagated, toxic or corrosive gases would not be developed and a minimum quantity of white fumes are emitted. Other materials can obviously be used in case of specific installation requirements, such as: PVC, for example, where a higher resistance to oils and chemicals is required (this material contains halogens, so it emits acid gas and smoke). PE, when a higher resistance to water and moisture is required (this material is no anti-flame, though).
Standards at a glance
A higher and higher care is paid towards safety in many places and environments in general. Fire is considered one of the most frequent cause of disasters and human lives loss. The standards have tried more and more to face this problem under various aspects. Over the last few years, particularly, both national (BS, DIN, CEI) and international (EN, IEC) standards have gone through a remarkable evolution. The evolution, though, is so fast that it is difficult to always have an updated picture. The purpose of this section is therefore to provide an overview on how the standards have faced the definition, the choice and the installation of the electric cables concerning the fire risks. Reference is also made to outdated standards since they are still present in many specifications.
Fire resistance
Fire resistance means that the cable or the installation where the cable is installed is capable to continue to operate even in case of fire for a specific period of time (from 30 to 180 minutes). To be more precise, it is possible to have two different definitions: Circuit Integrity (or Insulation Integrity) which indicates tests exclusively referred to cables; System Circuit Integrity is referred to tests on cables and systems (ladder, cable tray, clamps). In some countries, such as Germany or Belgium, the first characteristics (Circuit Integrity) is often indicated by an abbreviation (FE180 in case the test lasts 180 min) and the second one (System Circuit Integrity) by the abbreviations E30, E60, E90 that indicate the cable resistance for 30, 60 and 90 minutes according to a specific test and with different installation systems.

Constructive standards
BS 7629-1:2008 - Electric cables. Specification for 300/500 V fire resistant screened cables having low emission of smoke and corrosive gases when affected by fire. Multicore and multipair cables. This standard includes the currently most common cables onto the market of the fire resistant cables. Those cables are used in fire alarm and emergency lighting applications. They have a rated voltage of 300/500 V. Generally, the cables are particularly flexible and easy to be installed. These standards require that the cables get through the fire resistance tests prescribed by BS 6387 standards. BS 7846:2009 - Electric cables. Thermosetting insulated, armoured, fire-resistant cables of rated voltage 600/1000 V, having low emission of smoke and corrosive gases when affected by fire. Specification. This standard refers to the armoured cables with rated voltage 600/1000 V. The circuit integrity performance under fire conditions is assessed on the basis of various tests which either separately measure resistance to fire, resistance to fire with water, and resistance to fire with mechanical shock, or in combination measure resistance to fire with mechanical shock and water. BS EN 60702-1:2002 - Mineral insulated cables and their terminations with a rated voltage not exceeding 750 V. Cables. These standards apply to mineral insulated cables. Those cables have an insulation completely different from those seen so far: they are extremely resistant but rigid. Their installation is not handy and a particular care has to be paid to the installation to prevent moisture absorption by the mineral oxide.

Behaviour to the fire of the electric cables
The contents of this section is an overview of the problems related to the state of the art behaviour of the electric and fibre optic cables in case of fire. The picture is quite complex, both for the problems critical state and for all the connections and prescriptions existing between the various standards. Deliberately we did not deepen this topic since this would require many more pages and it would be useless in this context. It is anyhow the position of Cavicel as far as the cable behaviour in case of fire in industrial plants is concerned; more detailed technical information could be required any time at our Technical Department.

Multi Tube
For type SLO-FR the jelly filled tube containing the fibres is reinforced with glass yarns and is wound with a flame resistant tape. For type MLO-FR the jelly filled tubes containing the fibres are individually wound with a mica tape and are cabled around a central steel or FRP (fibreglass reinforced plastic) element. When necessary glass yarn is the traction element. A flame resistant tape improves fire resistance.

Fire Tests
Cables have to be properly designed, manufactured and also tested. Many tests are carried out during manufacturing or as final inspections. Many of them are attended by customers or third part inspectors. The tests are part of R&D, an extremely strategic activity for a Company and this is the reason why CAVICEL has invested in this field. You can find here the main tests concerning the behaviour of cables under fire conditions, and our main test equipments. It is important to verify all required performances and give the customers the full compliance to the requirements. CAVICEL is proud of its own laboratories and customers are always welcome to visit them.
BS 6387
Following tests are carried out to verify if a cable is capable of maintaining circuit integrity under fire condition, fire with water, and fire with mechanical shocks. During the tests the cables are maintained at their rated voltage. Fire Resistance (Cat. A B C S) The cable is exposed to fire at the specified temperature and time.

Storage
Cable drums should be stored so that the drum flanges do not contact cable on another drum.
Battens, where applied, should not be removed from drums until the cables are to be installed. Care should be taken to avoid injury with nails when removing battens. To remove possible plastic foil on cable, do not use sharp tools that could damage cable jacket.

INCORRECT
Cables stored at temperatures which are below those recommended for installation conditions, should not be subjected to any mechanical stress including shocks, impact, bending and torsion. If cables are not fully protected (with battens or plastic foils for example), store should be in a protected area and not weather-beaten. The cable end should be sealed to prevent ingress of moisture during transport and storage.
