Test Details
Purpose of test To determine the performance of a specimen of a cable when it is subjected to
the conditions of test specified in BS6387: 2013 "Specification for performance
requirements for cables required to maintain circuit integrity under fire
conditions".

The tests were performed in accordance with the procedures specified in BS

6387: 2013: Clauses 6, 7 and 8, and this report should be read in conjunction
with that Standard.

Scope of test BS 6387: 2013 is applicable to cables of rated voltage not exceeding
600/1000V and of overall diameter less than or equal to 20 mm.

The test is applicable to cables having two or more insulated conductors,

whether or not the cables incorporate other metallic elements such as armour,
screen or circuit protective conductor. The test is also applicable to cables
having one insulated conductor provided that the cable incorporates at least
one other metallic element. The test is not applicable to cables having one
insulated conductor but no other metallic element.

BS 6387: 2013 specifies methods of test for resistance to fire, resistance to fire
with water and resistance to fire and mechanical shock. The specification
categorises cables through the testing to three protocols which are as follows: -

Resistance to fire alone, Protocol C (Clause 6)

Resistance to fire with water, Protocol W (Clause 7),

Resistance to fire and mechanical shock, Protocol Z (Clause 8).

Fire test study Certain aspects of some fire test specifications are open to different
group/EGOLF interpretations. The Fire Test Study Group and EGOLF have identified a
number of such areas and has agreed Resolutions which define common
agreement of interpretations between fire test laboratories which are members
of the Groups. Where such Resolutions are applicable to this test they have
been followed.

Instruction to test The test was conducted on the 5th & 6th June 2017 at the request of Italcond
S.r.l., the sponsor of the test.

Provision of test The specimens were supplied by the sponsor of the test. Exova
specimens Warringtonfire was not involved in any selection or sampling procedure.

Conditioning of The specimens were received on the 17th May 2017.

specimens
Prior to the test the specimens were conditioned for at least 16 hours in an
atmosphere having a temperature of 23 ± 2°C and a relative humidity of 50 ±
5%.

Burner Temperature measurements recorded by each thermocouple were logged

verification using an Omega ‘HH1384’ four channel thermometer and data logger at 1
procedure second intervals over a period of 10 minutes and then averaged. This
determined the gas & air flow rates and the position of the burner that were
used for the subsequent cable test.

The gas and air flows were provided through the use of M&W Instruments mass
flow controllers, model numbers ‘D-6341-DR’ and ‘D-6361-DR’.

Test Results
Applicability of The test results relate only to the behaviour of the specimen of the cable under
test results the particular conditions of test; they are not intended to be the sole criterion for
assessing the potential fire hazards of the product in use.

The test results relate only to the specimen of the cable in the form in which it
was tested. Small differences in the composition of the product may significantly
affect the performance during the test and may therefore invalidate the test
results. Care should be taken to ensure that any product, which is supplied or
used, is fully represented by the specimen, which was tested.

Results Protocol C - Resistance to fire alone (Clause 6)

When tested in accordance with the procedures specified in Clause 6 of the

standard, for a period of 3 hours at a temperature of 950±40°C and a rated
voltage of 500V-rms, the cable maintained its circuit integrity and consequently
satisfied the performance requirements specified in BS 6387: 2013.

Protocol W - Resistance to fire with water (Clause 7)

When tested in accordance with the procedures specified in Clause 7 of the

standard, for a period of 30 minutes at a temperature of 650±40°C and a rated
voltage of 500V-rms, the cable maintained its circuit integrity and consequently
satisfied the performance requirements specified in BS 6387: 2013.

Protocol Z - Resistance to fire and mechanical shock (Clause 8)

When tested in accordance with the procedures specified in Clause 8 of the

standard, for a period of 15 minutes at a temperature of 950±40°C and a rated
voltage of 500V-rms, the cable maintained its circuit integrity and consequently
satisfied the performance requirements specified in BS 6387: 2013.

Conclusion When tested in accordance with BS 6387: 2013: Clauses 6, 7 and 8 the cable
meets the criteria for Protocols C, W and Z and can be designated as “Category
CWZ”.

Validity The specification and interpretation of fire test methods are the subject of
ongoing development and refinement. Changes in associated legislation may
also occur. For these reasons it is recommended that the relevance of test
reports over five years old should be considered by the user. The laboratory that
issued the report will be able to offer, on behalf of the legal owner, a review of
the procedures adopted for a particular test to ensure that they are consistent
with current practices, and if required may endorse the test report.

This report may only be reproduced in full. Extracts or abridgements shall not be
published without permission of Exova Warringtonfire.
