Travel Back to the 1950s

By Elsie Walker hese days you see it everywhere..the news about problems with the countrys economy, unemployment woes, high gas prices, and the list goes on. For a few days, wouldnt you like to turn back the clock to a time of happy days. Thats just what will happen on Labor Day weekend. From August 31st through September 4th, the Parsippany Hilton will be transported back to the 1950s. Slicked back hair and doo wop groups will be back in style. A Summer Place and Jailhouse Rock will

be among the features playing at the local drive-in and classic cars will fill the lots. Welcome to the 29th annual Lead East. The driving force for this blast from the past is Terry Cook of Appleton Productions in Long Valley. With his assistant, Linda, hes taken the traditional car show and transformed it into a party, the worlds biggest 50s party. That party includes bands, prom night, and the sights and sounds of a much more innocent era. It's 100% American, 100% family, 100% nostalgia. Kids under 12 are free with an adult, said Cook.

Some might wonder where the lead in Lead East comes from. As the events website shares, The word LEAD is a synonym for "customized car." Lead East boasts an impressive number of cars. Filling the Hilton and adjacent lots are classic cars from 1972 and earlier. This year, Cook anticipates that there will be 18,000 cars on display. While some people come to stay for the duration of the event and show their cars, other come as spectators for a few hours or more to take in the atmosphere and get away from the 21st century woes. Providing [theres] good weather all weekend, [therell be] 15,000 to 20,000 [people], shared Cook.

Among the events on hand is a drive-in theater set up right in the Hilton lot. The nightly venue boasts some classic movies including ones featuring 50s teen favorites Sandra Dee and Elvis Presley. On tap are: (September 1st) From Here to Eternity, A Summer Place, and Jailhouse Rock; (September 2nd) Sands of Iwo Jima and Flying Tigers plus an art car documentary; (September 3rd) Alfred Hitchcocks Psycho, The Angry Red Planet, and a hot rod documentary; and (Sunday, September 4th) Alfred Hitchcocks Rear Window and a sci-fi thriller. For more information on the 29th annual Lead East admission and events, visit its website: http://leadeast.net

Submitted by Rick Busciglio he Chester Theatre Group will be holding auditions for its November 2011 production of The Cocktail Hour by A. R. Gurney. The production will be directed by Cindy Alexander and will have performances on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. beginning November 4, 2011 through November 20, 2011. Auditions will be held on Sunday, August 28 at 2 p.m. and on Tuesday, August 30 at 7 p.m. at the Black River Playhouse, located at the corners of Grove Street and Maple Avenue in Chester, NJ. Readings will be from the script. Two female and two male actors are needed. The character description is provided below. Bradley early 70s (70-74) WASP patriarch of a wealthy upstate NY family. (Buffalo) Dresses well, plays golf, goes to the club and presides over the bar at the evenings cocktail hour. Ann His wife- could be a couple of years younger than her husband but not by much. Also very tastefully dressed, Ann is an elegant lady who is skilled at handling the tasks of running a household. (i.e. man-

aging the servants) She is also very refined and seemingly a little dotty. However, she is the northern version of a Steel Magnolia stronger than she looks. John Their son- early 40s (42-44) Lives in NYC and works as an editor in a publishing house. However, his true calling is as a playwright. He has had several plays produced, but is by no means successful at it. He is in the midst of evaluating his life thus far. Nina Their daughter two years older than her brother John. Happily married daughter who stayed in her hometown. She is obsessed with animals, particularly dogs and longs to change her life. She should have a repressed edge. THE STORY: The time is the mid 1970s, the place a city in upstate New York. John, a playwright, returns to his family's house, bringing with him a new play which he has written about them. His purpose is to obtain their permission to proceed with production, but his wealthy, very proper parents are cautious from the outset. Yoga and Good Health: How Backbends Healed My Back

By Janice C. Molinari n 1999 at the age of 30, I had emergency surgery to remove a herniated disc from my lower back. As the years rolled by and what remained of that disc wore away I found myself in consistent pain as the bones rubbed up against each other. Id wake up in agony, rainy days brought a dull ache in my spine and bending down even for the simple task of tying my shoe was an uncomfortable experience. Over time, working around this daily pain changed the way I slept, stood and engaged in everyday activities. It created further misalignment in my hips and a curvature in my spine, creating a vicious cycle. Two years ago, on my birthday, I received a tremendous gift when I stepped into my first Anusara Yoga class and stepped onto the path that would eventually heal my back and better my qual-

ity of life. This particular style of yoga has completely changed my life and my health. Anusara Yoga, founded by John Friend, focuses on proper alignment, and over time, this has carried into my everyday posture. Ive brought greater awareness to my alignment in the way I sit, stand and walk and better posture has allowed for more space in my vertebrae and overall relief from chronic pain. (Its also made me look more confident and a few friends have commented on the fact that I look thinnernot bad for an added bonus! Ill take it!) When I began my practice, I never could imagine that I would enjoy backbends as much as I do. What once looked painful and nearly impossible now gives me great joy and feels amazing. Through practicing proper alignment, I find myself getting safely into poses that

create space in my spine, increase my bloodflow and allow for greater strength and conditioning. I now wake up every morning entirely painfree. Ive removed the economy-sized bottle of Advil from my medicine cabinet, and that for me, is nothing short of miraculous. More importantly, when I step onto my mat for practice, the yoga has allowed me to engage with my imperfections. Its a premise called radical acceptance where you dont just acknowledge your injuries, you embrace them wholeheartedly and allow them to inform your practice. When your back is hurting or your hamstrings are shouting at you, instead of blowing through the pain like society teaches us to do, you allow it to shape your practice. You learn better how to nurture yourself and to listen to your injuries. By listening, it will eventually lead you into proper align-

ment. When I come off my mat and out into the world, I find myself applying this in my everyday life as well. I take the time to set myself up right and care for my wellbeing. Im more acutely aware of the areas in life where I blow right by what might serve me best as I live life in the fast lane. And I change the way I engage allowing for a healthier, more

nurturing approach. Yoga has changed me for the better in many ways. When I step into the studio and onto my mat, I take pride in respecting myself enough to continually make the time to practice what I enjoy, something that is healthy for me, heals me and enriches my life. Janice C. Molinari is a television producer and

owner of Ananda Yoga, an Anusara based studio located in Mendham, NJ. She welcomes questions from anyone looking to improve their health and relieve pain through the practice of yoga. She can be contacted at Janice@ anandayogamendham.com. To read more of her writing, visit; www.accepttheinvitation. blogspot.com

continued from page 11 ern plays. And there is also John's sister, Nina, to contend with, although her reservations have to do with the fact that John has given her character such a minor role. Their confrontation takes place during the ritual of the cocktail hour, and as the martinis flow so do the recriminations and revelations, both funny and poignant. In the end it is evident that what John has written is closer to the truth than his family has heretofore been willing to admit, and that beneath their WASP reserve his parents and siblings are as beset with uncertainties and frustrations as their presumed "inferiors." But while they seem shackled by the past, and tantalized disappointments and, with unfailing warmth and humor, converting pained resignation into cautious but hopeful anticipation. Winner of the Lucille Lortel Award as Best Off-Broadway Play. A long-run New York success, this witty, perceptive play blends mordant humor with moments of affecting poignancy. "THE COCKTAIL HOUR is as funny and moving as The Dining Roomit could be the best play he has done so far." The New Yorker. "It makes for a deliciously funny and also occasionally touching evening, as Gurney's family sit around raking over old coals and settling old scores with a quite new and beguiling freshness."NY Post. "The lines in the play crackle and pop with an electricity all their own." DramaLogue. "when I watch Gurney at his best, as he is here, I laugh through the tears." NY Daily News.

Great Clips Opens in Chester

By Cheryl Conway eing a mother is one thing, but an owner of a hair cutting salon is a profession that Manisha Mirchandani would have never imagined. Mirchandani of Jefferson had been happily producing television commercials for 16 years, but two weeks prior to having her first child and going on maternity leave, she was laid off from her job. Although disappointed by the news, Mirchandani decided to take a different career path once her baby turned three months old. She looked into franchising and after careful review and study decided to set up her own business- Great Clips Salon in Chester. A national franchise, with 3,000 salons nationwide, Great Clips Salon offers affordable hair-cuts for the entire family. Open late, as well as on Sundays, Great Clips is a walkin salon completely centered around customer convenience, explains Mirchandani. Mirchandani, along with her husband and co-owner John Consigli, opened the Chester salon- located at the Chester Shoprite Center on Route 206 - this past May with a grand opening and reception with hair-cuts offered at a special low price of $2.99. Pricing now

for cut and blow dry is at $14 for adults, $12 for children and seniors. Prices are a-la-carte, with shampoo for $4; formal styles such as straightening or curling between $22-$30. The salon focuses exclusively on haircuts and does not offer color or perms. In January, the salon offers a Great Haircut Sale with discounted haircuts. Most just want a haircut to get in and get out, says Mirchandani. Its very affordable to our families. We offer great customer service. Its very family oriented, comfortable and friendly. We offer value and convenience to our customers. With no appointments at Great Clips, sometimes there is a wait time, admits Mirchandani. We really try to focus on kids being comfortable, especially when there is a wait so she has a television in the waiting area playing Nickelodeon as well as an area up front for kids to play. Offering later hours than many other salons, Great Clips in Chester is opened 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays; Saturdays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Sundays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. All stylists are licensed in cosmetology and attend classes to keep up with market trends.

Stock the area with supplies for the upcoming year. School Supplies Check each teachers supply list and send in the requested supplies. Locker Decide with your child what is needed to organize their locker. This may include: locker shelves, a white board, a magnetic pencil basket, etc. Encourage your child to find time to periodically clean out their locker (go in early or stay late if that is allowed). Planner / Homework Strategy Help your child come up with a strategy for

recording and keeping track of assignments and for bringing papers to and from school (an agenda book along with an accordion folder can work well). Paperwork Strategy Set up a file box, by subject, for storing papers that are not being used currently, but that your child needs to save. Backpack Check on the backpack capacity requirements for your childs grade and select a bag that will accommodate the items that will be brought to and from school. Night before Preparation Set a policy of prepping and staging school items before going to bed. This includes: packing the backpack and gym/sports items for the next day, making lunches/snacks (or packing money) and picking out clothes. Follow these suggestions, and you will help create lasting habits that will help the back to school transition be easier, smoother and more enjoyable for all! Treatment of Unexplained Infertility Utilizing Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine

nexplained infertility represents the most frequent diagnosis in women. It simply means that your doctor cannot find any medical explanation for why you are having fertility issues. This does not mean that there is not a problem. It means that, due to insufficient medical knowledge and current technology, the medical solution is difficult to find. However, Chinese Medicine is able to identify the subtle fertility imbalances that may interfere with a womans ability to conceive. More importantly, these subtle problems can not only be fully explained, but also treated successfully, with acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Chinese Medicine takes a different approach to defining infertility and looks at the subtle manifestations and ramifications of imbalance across the entire body. Deborah, a Chinese Medicine fertility specialist, has over 10 years experience in the treatment of reproductive and fertility issues. She often discovers subtle fertility problems by carefully examining the different stages of a womans menstrual cycle and evaluating every aspect of the bodys health, individual emotions and lifestyle. Underlying factors she has found that may possibly contribute to infertility from the perspective of Chinese Medicine include the following: Blood Deficiency If a woman does not have menstrual periods, or experiences a slight or short menstrual flow, it indicates that there is not enough blood to nourish the uterine lining, which then cannot support the implantation and development of the embryo. For successful implantation the endometrium must be both thick and nourishing. Acupuncture and specific blood tonic herbs increase the production of blood and enhance its flow to the endometrial lining, allowing the body to produce more blood vessels and create more tissue and thus contribute to the successful implantation and nourishment of an embryo. Blood Stagnation It is not uncommon to see patients who complain of severe menstrual cramping, large blood clots, dark brown

menstrual flow, and incomplete discharge, followed by spotting. In Chinese medicine, we call this static blood. It means poor blood flow through the uterine arteries, which causes the uterus itself to become a toxic environment. This static blood also impacts the quality of the endometrium and thus hinders implantation. Acupuncture, along with blood regulating herbs, clears blood stasis, reduces constriction in the uterine arteries, and encourages the complete discharge of menstrual blood. As a result, new endometrial tissue becomes fresh, healthy, and ready for an embryo to become implanted. Cold Womb/Cold Uterus Cold womb means that the uterine lining fails to respond to the warming hormone, progesterone. Women with this condition usually have slow rising and/or early declining BBT (Basal Body Temperature). Cold hands and feet, cramps helped by a heating pad, lower back pain, low libido, frequent urination and early morning loose stools are also symptomatic of this condition. Cold womb not only causes the wrong temperature for the embryo to grow, like a seed growing in chilly weather, but also congeals the blood inhibiting uterine circulation. The focus of treatment is to warm the uterus, which in turn maintains progesterone at satisfactory levels. This not only helps metabolic activity, but also allows the uterus to secrete sufficient nutrients, and thereby creates a highly nurturing environment in which to implant the embryo. Stress Stress plays an important role in influencing fertility. Stress interrupts hormonal communication and leads to hypothalamic anovulation. It can also increase prolactin levels and prevent ovulation. Stress can cause tension in the fallopian tubes, and affect the transportation of the egg, sperm or embryo. Studies indicate that electro-acupuncture stimulates the sensory nerve fibers and may inhibit the sympathetic outflow at the spinal level (Fertility and Sterility vol.77. no.4, April 2002). Additionally, acupuncture increases production of beta-endorphin, which is a natural chemical in our body that helps reduce anxiety and tension,

improve sleep and increase resistance to stress. So the patient becomes calmer and more at ease. Prolonged or Severe PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) Prolonged or severe PMS causes hormonal imbalance and low fertility. The response in the body to an imbalance in progesterone and estrogen levels may be irritability, bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, sleep disturbance, and food cravings in the week before the period or even two weeks into each cycle. Chinese medicine, acupuncture and herbal medicine is known to address premenstrual syndrome by regulating the energy flow in the Liver meridian. This, in turn, naturally improves the bodys hormonal balance and encourages optimum function of the reproductive system. Poor Egg Quality We know there is nothing we can do to change the DNA of the egg itself, but we can certainly enhance follicular nourishment and development. Chinese medicine emphasizes the replenishment of Kidney Jing and Yin (reproductive essence), enhances the blood flow to the ovaries, and increases the resistance to stress, which naturally exerts a positive influence on egg quality. Deborah recognizes that most unexplained infertility is caused by dysfunction in the body and, therefore, the goal of treatment is to help the bodys systems return to correct functionality. In addition to carefully evaluating each patient, discovering subtle signs of imbalances that impact on fertility, she believes that it is important to keep the treatments congruent with the phases and stages of the menstrual cycle. Deborah utilizes years of experience, in applying acupuncture and specific timing in the use of herbal medicine and their required doses at the appropriate stage of follicle and endometrial development. Having treated a high number of women with unexplained infertility, Deborah strongly believes that most functional infertility can be treated successfully with the help of acupuncture in conjunction with herbal medicine, and the results she has seen have been enormously encouraging. My greatest joy in life has been helping couples realize their dream of having a child. I have been truly blessed with the opportunity to help both men and women enhance their fertility. Harlins Point of View....

Toms Point of View...

Ex Unus , Plures

When Is Enough, Enough?

by Harlin Parker Out with E Pluribus Unum. In with Ex Unus, Plures. ver the past two hundred plus years, the guiding ideal in America has been E Pluribus Unum or Out of Many, One. However imperfectly the people of America came together, that was the motto, the principal which infused our social and political discourse. In later years we called it the great Melting Pot. Whether one was born here or came here, the idea was that we defined ourselves with the same name, American. Unlike other countries, the United States is not just one country, it is a republic, a willful joining together of separate independently sovereign states. So we find ourselves at least somewhat deliberately separate, both as citizens of the state in which we reside as well as citizens of the country. Fortunately, though, the vast majority of us see ourselves as citizens of our country first and our state second (although Texans seem to have a problem with that idea). We cherish the individual liberties and freedoms which our American citizenship allows us. Indeed, every generation of Americans has fought to protect our freedoms, our liberties, our country, from enemies both foreign and domestic. The states the seceded oh so many years ago learned the hard way that one means one (Texans might want to take note of that). Coming together, working together, has been and is our strength. But E Pluribus Unum is under attack. These days it appears that Americans are pulling themselves apart from one another. We may all call ourselves Americans but its clear that many Americans have lost the E Pluribus Unum feeling. Americans are fractured not just into political parties but by all manner of self identity. Look around. We see the us versus them mentality all around us. It isnt pretty. And unless we reverse this unwise course, it will be our downfall. America is a great country and, so far at least, the dominant force in the world. But it wasnt always that way and there is no guarantee it will remain that way. History is littered with once dominant countries that are dominant no more. The 20th Century was called the American Century as it was then that America grew to be the preeminent country of the world, first, by far, in almost every category. Industrial and military might. The highest standard of living for

those lucky enough to live here. The beacon and protector of freedom, liberty and democracy. People all over the world clamored to come here. Many still do. We like to think of it all as American exceptionalism. But, you know, the world turns. Life is unpredictable. Nothing is guaranteed, including Americas wealth and dominance in the world. Over the past several decades Americas standing in the world has changed, not for the better. Weve gone from being the worlds creditor to being the worlds biggest debtor. Our infrastructure is not only aging, its crumbling and obsolete. Our schools, with some exceptions, do a poor job preparing our children to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. More and more Americans are slipping out of the middle class as an ever greater share of wealth is concentrated in the hands of the top 1% of society. Yet, at this time in our countrys history when we need to come together, to work together to address our problems and to make our future bright, we squabble amongst ourselves, calling each other names, hunkering down into groups of extreme ideologues, unwilling, seemingly incapable, of conducting ourselves any better than petulant children. So thank you, Tea Partiers. I hope youre proud of yourselves. You dont bear all of the blame but you sure as heck bear the lions share, by far. The reckless behavior of Tea Party affiliated representatives in Congress, and their supporters back home, holding our entire nation hostage to their narrow minded agenda, refusing to raise the debt ceiling so that our obligations could be paid (not just the interest on our bonds) was incredibly irresponsible. Yet Tea Partiers are proud of their childish, sophomoric behavior. Proud! You know, patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel. We see that today as Sara Palin and the rest of the Tea Partiers wrap themselves in the flag and proclaim themselves to be the real Americans. Us versus them. Having read the constitution, seemingly for the first, and only, time, Tea Partiers fancy themselves as all knowing experts on all issues constitution-wise. These guys know whats right. And theyre not only constitutional scholars, theyre all knowing economists also. The sheer hubris by which they conduct themselves is breathcontinued on page 21

by Thomas Lotito would like to give thanks to God for the brave Tea Party influenced Congressman that stood up to President Obama on the recent debt ceiling deal. They have not drunk the Obama Kool-Aid and they don't believe that America can spend it's way out of it's current economic problems. Why is it that some Conservative Republicans are not happy with the current deal on the debt ceiling? It was a major win and just one battle in a war for America's economic wellness that will continue on into the foreseeable future. Why is it that every few years a Conservative political movement pops up and then melts away into the landscape? It happened in the 60's, the 80's, 90's and now in 2010. The country has certainly grown more liberal despite these movements. Why? Incrementalism! Liberals are satisfied with half a loaf, while Republicans want the whole enchilada and are never happy when they don't get everything they want all at once. Where is the Republican 40 year plan in the house and senate to keep majority control and move the conservative agenda forward? Is there a plan in the senate to gain a majority in the next election? In 2010 were the Republicans flying by the seat of their pants making back room deals with Democrats when they got a wake up all from the conservative base of the party and took over the majority of the congress? Nancy Pelosi remained the minority leader in the house because she knows that she could be back as majority leader. Why? Republicans failed in 2006 to hold the house and senate and spent like Democrats and put themselves back into minority status. If it wasn't for the Tea Party, the Republican Party would still be content with their minority status. Pelosi knows she can chip away at the Republican majority year in and year out. Turning two to five congressional seats Democrat for the next five years would be considered a major victory for Democrats. Conservative Republicans must come up with a long term plan to hold the majority of the house and senate. If they don't America will become a debtor nation controlled by left wing liberal Democrats, statists, communists and socialists, who will redistribute your money, gut the military and turn America into a two tier rich and poor welfare state .

Meanwhile, the liberal press is blaming the Tea Party for the recent down grade of America's credit rating by Standard & Poor from a triple A rating to a double A plus. Why isn't Barack Obama taking responsibility for the down-grade? Obama has the bully pulpit and the main steam press will support the storyline as Obama and Democrats good! Republicans and Conservatives Bad! This is just a small snap shot of the national geo-political headlines of the summer drama in Washington. The point I'm trying to make is the Tea Party was very effective holding back a portion of Obama's agenda. It wasn't the whole enchilada, but it was an incremental victory. The Tea Party must not quit, must not fold, or get discouraged. There are many more battles that must be fought and won before the Tea Party can claim victory in the war for the heart of America. This leads me to the question, where is the Tea Party on local level here in Washington Twp. Have you read your property tax bill? In July West Morris Central HS (WMCHS) received $458,594 in state aid from the State of NJ. WMCHS returned the money to the residents and there will be a zero percent tax increase on the HS portion of your property tax bill. According to Jason Kostenblatt of the Patch, the WMCHS board of education voted to direct $184,290 to it's budget and reserve the remaining $274,304 for future budgets in the form of tax relief and class size reduction. However, the K-8 BOE also received $409,565 in state aid and posted the following message on their facebook page; "Strong consideration will be given to using the money for tax relief, educational programming, or a combination of both." In other words, the BOE, with no one watching, kept the money. Where's the the Tea Party? If the Local Tea Party was engaged in the election for school board, the $ 409,565 might been in the pockets of the tax payers, not in the pockets of the BOE administration. Who by the way, is looking to expand school infrastructure, despite decreasing enrollment and shrinking revenue due to a bad economy. ( but that's another story.) My point again is, the local Tea Party must get active at the local level if you want to stop unnecessary property tax increases . continued on page 21

Ex Unus , Plures...
taking. Unfortunately, it is now causing us real damage. Tea Partiers are more than allowed to make their case. If they believe our country truly has a spending problem and that continually cutting taxes, continually shrinking government at all levels, allowing private companies unregulated operations, allowing the wealthiest Americans to garner ever greater shares of wealth, and leaving the poor and defenseless to fend for themselves is the right prescription for America, then fine, make the case. But do so in a civilized manner, understanding that other real Americans have differing opinions. My way or the highway is not the way to help our country. The reckless hijacking of the Congressional process, one that is already dysfunctional enough, by threatening the ability of our country to pay its bills is completely unacceptable. I dont care what the Tea Partiers problem is. That kind of behavior is dangerously irresponsible. We dont all have to like each other. In fact, it seems that those on the radical right just plain dont like many Americans. Fine. But we do all have to keep in mind that we all live here together. Were all real Americans. Were all patriotic. Nobody, and I mean nobody, has a monopoly on truth or on what the right answers are. This is a democracy, folks. History has shown us quite clearly that in order to make it work we have to accommodate each other. An unwillingness to compromise bespeaks a childish attitude and one that fails to appreciate the delicate balance which maintains our American democracy. E Pluribus Unum requires compromise. Without compromise, Ex Unus , Plures. Out of One, Many. If that happens, we all lose. Send comments to harlin@harlinparker.org

When Is Enough, Enough...

continued from page 20 How much more property taxes do you want to pay? When is enough, enough? The bottom line is the K-8 BOE is full of tax and spenders, well meaning people, with an insatiable appetite to spend your money. Why is the BOE willing to throw every dollar you pay in taxes at more infrastructure while enrollment is going down and janitors take home 100K plus salaries? Meanwhile, your kids get a second rate education with Connected and Everyday Math. If the K-8 school was doing such a great job providing the highest standards in education, why are parents who could afford it, enrolling their kids in private schools and math a tutoring store has opened for business in downtown Long Valley? So, while it's a breath of fresh air to see the Tea Party get a victory against Obama's agenda, and WMCHS return money to the tax payer. It's been a let down to watch the K-8 BOE rob Washington Twp. blind during summer vacation. Lastly, if you are a Tea Party supporter and you know that property taxes need reform, please get involved, come out and find out what's really going on in our schools. The only qualification a person needs to run for school board besides being a resident is the ability to say no to any new spending at the K-8 school board. Agree? Disagree? Between the Bread Chefs Secrets to Building the Perfect Sandwich

hef Bobby Flay knows a thing or two about creating flavorful sandwich recipes made with real, simple ingredients. Now hes letting others in on his secrets as he teams up with Hellmanns and Best Foods to help America build the perfect sandwich. Everyone has an opinion about how to make the perfect sandwich, from the musthave ingredients to the highly personal sandwich architecture, said Flay. No matter the sandwich recipe, I always use Hellmanns mayonnaise to bring out the best in my sandwich, plus I have to cut the bread diagonally to make it just right. Thats my idea of a perfect sandwich. Here are some of Flays tips on how he adds his personal touch to sandwiches: Thick, crusty breads like ciabatta are great for sandwiches to help complement softer ingredients like tomatoes and cheese. Bring a crunch to your sandwich with vegetables like sliced cucumber or fennel.

Not only do they add a fresh taste, they wont wilt when they come in contact with condiments. Add bright colors to the sandwich with parsley leaves, finely diced red onions, or green, yellow and red peppers. Dont be afraid to experiment with new flavors. Jazz up your sandwich with a little cranberry relish, chopped, toasted nuts, lemon-basil or even a little thousand island coleslaw - the skys the limit. Here are some of Bobbys savory sandwich creations. Creative Kids in the Kitchen Young chefs Give PB&J A Makeover

veryone loves a classic PB&J sandwich. Now, with a little culinary creativity, your family can liven up lunch and win money for college. Over the past 10 years, Jif Peanut Butter has inspired thousands of kid chefs to reinvent the peanut butter sandwich for the chance of earning a fund for college. This year, in the 10th Annual Jif Most Creative Peanut Butter Sandwich Contest, families can foster creativity in the kitchen for a chance to win a $25,000 college fund, plus $10,000 to purchase educational products. Sandwiches will be judged on creativity, taste, nutritional balance, appearance and ease of preparation. 10 semi-finalists will be selected to compete in a national online vote in January. Five finalists will be selected to compete at a live judging event in New York City in March.

Four runners up will each receive $2,500 college funds. Visit www.jif.com and www.jifenespanol.com between July 28 and October 12 for Official Rules and the entry form. Open to legal residents of the 50 United States and D.C., between 6 and 12 years of age by October 12, 2011. Contests void where prohibited. See Official Rules for complete details. The 2011 winner was 8-year-old Margalit M. of Raleigh, N.C. for her Wushu Chicken Tacos, pairing Jif Creamy Peanut Butter with chicken, asparagus and squash, all wrapped in a tortilla. Better Back to School Lunches and Munches

aking sure kids get balanced and nutritious school lunches and afterschool snacks doesnt have to be hard. In fact, it can be fun. Parents can ensure kids get a lunch thats good for them and that theyll eat by making it themselves with products they trust. All Boars Head Brand deli meats and cheeses are gluten free, and there are dozens of lower sodium and heart-healthy options to choose from, as well. No matter what your health priority, you can rest assured your family is in good hands with Boars Head. Here are some simple tips from Boars Head for lunches and munches kids will love: If your child leaves most of his or her sandwich behind, use cookie cutters to create a favorite shape such as an airplane, car, star or heart. The fun shape might encourage your child to finish the entire sandwich. A colorful selection of food and different texture adds appeal carrot sticks and green grapes for color, whole wheat pretzels and crackers for crunch. Put a surprise in your childs lunch: a

sticker, a note of encouragement, or a small toy. Children love the do-it-yourself aspect of building their own pizza or making their own cracker stack. You can make the experience fun and healthier by cubing Boars Head meats and cheeses and putting them in a bag along with some low-salt crackers. Roll Boars Head meats and cheeses for dipping into condiments it will make a hungry child happy and keep them satisfied until dinner time. Another fun idea is to start a family food album where you and your kids keep track of the foods that provide nourishment and the ones that offer little or no nutritional value. Have your kids cut photos of food and nutrition labels making note of those foods that are considered healthy and those that are not. Your kids will learn about healthy eating and enjoy fun arts and crafts projects, too. For a quick and tasty lunch, try these easy Turkey and Apple Roll-ups. And for a simple after-school snack, Turkey Kabobs are fun and easy to make. Visit www.boarshead.com for more kid-friendly lunch and snack ideas like these.
