PROPER NOUNS
A proper noun is a specific name for someone or something. It tells
exactly which person, place or thing we are referring to…it must begin
with a capital letter….treat proper nouns with a bit of respect…all
right!!!!!!!

1. In each of these sentences, at least one of the nouns is a proper


noun and needs a capital letter. Put a capital letter in each place
that it is needed.
a. Our family dog, jossy, used to be called smokey.
b. My brother lives on the mississippi river; his name is mervyn
mcdorknut .
c. Our school is called dunalley primary school and is in the south
east of Tasmania.
d. Emily, gemma and caroline go on a holiday to noosa every
September.
e. My ballet teacher’s name is barbara todd; she used to dance in
the Australian ballet company.

1. Match each specific proper noun on the left to the more general
common noun that also fits the person, place or thing that is
identified. Draw a line to link each pair.

2. Circle as many common nouns as you can(there are nine), in


this paragraph and put capitals in for the proper nouns. There is

There was a nervous giggle from one of the girls in the class, but
otherwise everything went very quiet. The silence was broken by mr
sharp giving a small cough, and then saying, ‘mrs jackson, I think tom
should come along to my Office for a little chat about sensible
behaviour.’
