Section-A (10 Marks) Answer all the questions. 1. State Hookes Law. 2 x 10 = 20
2. What is factor of safety? 3. A steel wire, 10 meter long and 3mm diameter, is subjected to a pull of 600N.calculate (i) the stress (ii) the elongation, if E = 2x105 N/mm2 and (iii) the factor of safety if the tensile strength is 500 N/mm2. 4. Define torsion and write its equation 5. What are the assumptions in pure torsion? 6. Define polar modulus? 7. Compare closed coil and open coil helical spring with neat sketch? 8. Define stiffness? 9. What is pure bending or simple bending? 10. What is section modulus and write its expression?

Section-B (30 Marks) Answer all questions. 10 x 5 =50 1. A simply supported beam of length 6m carries the u.d.l load and two point loads as shown in figure below.
Draw S.F and B.M for the beam. Also calculate the maximum bending moment.

100 r.p.m. the maximum torque being 20% greater than the mean. The shear stress is not to exceed 60N/mm2 and twist in a length of 4 m not to exceed 20. Calculate its external diameter and internal diameters which would satisfy both the above conditions. Take C=.85x105 N/mm2. A closed coiled helical spring of 10 cm mean diameter is made up of 1 cm diameter rod and has 20 turns. The spring carried an axial load of 300N. Calculate i. The maximum shear stress induced ii. The deflection of spring, iii. Stiffness of the spring, and iv. Frequency of free vibration. Drive the expression for bending stress. A beam is simply supported and carries a uniformly distributed load 40kN/m run over the whole span. The section of beam is rectangular having depth as 500 mm. if the maximum stress in the material of the beam is 120 N/mm2 and moment of inertia of the section is 7x108 mm4. Find the span of the beam. (5) A beam is of T-section as shown in Figure below. The beam is simply supported over a span of 4 m and carries a uniformly distributed load of 1.7 kN/m run over the entire span. Determine the maximum tensile and maximum compressive stress.
