Discussion
Advantages of Vibration
(1)In Mobile phones
In mobile phones vibration is used as the method of alert which doesn't involve any audible sound. This is quite useful for the users in conditions such as lectures , meetings , etc. where silence should be maintained.

(2)Packing Machines
In packing machines vibration is used to firmly pack powders , small chips or to extract gases trapped in fluids. ( ex:- Milk powder packing )

(3)Mechanical Hammers
Specially in road construction mechanized hammers are used to compress the soil as a pre-construction process. This uses the vibration of a heavy platform.

(4)Vibrato Separator (5)In Medicine

In medicine there are treatment methods that can be heal by application of vibrations. Research carried out at NASA , revealed that astronauts might prevent bone loss by exercising on a vibrating plate for about 20 minutes a day.

(6)Music
As we all know sound is generated as a result of vibration. Although most of the time this sound is unpleasant or undesirable , when it is controlled to make pleasant feeling to human mind it is what we call music. Music is generated by vibrating diaphragms, strings or columns of air.

Disadvantages of Vibration
Mainly vibrations can induce high stress in various machinery or even in outdoor structures and may cause structural failures which can lead to a disaster. In machinery this can be caused by the resonance of the parts of the machinery itself or outside. In early times aircrafts had this kind of a problem where the wings collapsed due to the resonance caused by the wind. In outdoor structures such as bridges , towers or any other buildings this can be caused by the aerodynamic forces induced by the wind. The most well known example is Tacoma bridge,USA ,collapsed in 1940 due to large deflections caused by resonance. In designing structures or machinery it is the engineers job to prevent these kind of failures using their knowledge of vibrations.
