Dear Friend, I want to share something exciting with you.

Hope House (HH) girls have a library of their own and they have many books on home based science experiments. About a year ago, two of our girls did an experiment to turn a real egg into a rubber egg as a science experiment. We recorded it and put it on a laptop for them to demonstrate at their school after obtaining permission from the school. Even after more than a year, they still remember the experiment. This encouraged the other girls to learn that what you learn by hands on and by demonstrating to teach to others helps to remember better. Since then, many girls have been doing many small time experiments. Now we want to take it to the next level. October 2nd to 8th is observed as the Joy of Giving week where one can give for any cause of their choice. What we did was this: All the girls were encouraged to demonstrate as many science experiments as they possibly could and each experiment would have them win 100 rupees. We called it Learn & Earn Science Exhibition. We have experienced the joy of giving at the HH on October 8th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm where our girls had showcased their experiments. In the next few pages, we would like for you to view our girls work in photos and also read a newspaper clipping that appeared in todays paper. As always, would love to hear from you all. Ruby Nakka.

Media coverage of the Learn & Earn Science Exhibition

9th October, 2011 By Mr. Narayana Murthy NGO Model Scheme on Science for School kids
Vellore: A local NGO HOPE House has come up with a novel idea to make children learn Science better. A Learn & Earn scheme launched here on Saturday promotes and focuses on encouraging the kids to earn while learning Science all by themselves. The HOPE House has 17 orphaned girl students as its residents who are studying in the government elementary, high and higher secondary schools in the vicinity. Says its Director Ruby Nakka, a Social Activist, while the students initially had hard time learning the scientific concepts, we introduced simple tools and models to explain to them. Later on, the kids were motivated to build models of science projects from their books. As part of the Joy of Giving celebrations, the NGO had come up with a plan to encourage the children to conduct an exhibition of their models with a prize tag for each of the exhibits. The kids were encouraged to take up maximum of give experiments each for which they would receive Rs. 500/- as remuneration being donated by a local businessman. They money would be spent by the kids to purchase books and cloth material etc for their own use. The kids had displayed a variety of experiments in their House much to delight of the visitors from the locality. The visitors were surprised to hear the kids explain intricate science concepts with the help of simple models. They were able to face questions from the visitors on how fire gets extinguished, why does an egg float in saline water, why does a pencil in water medium appear bent etc in a confident way.

There was an impressive array of 38 experiments and the students took pains to explain in details thus providing how interesting the art of learning science is! What is more they were happy that their learning was helping them to earn money which they considered as a big reward! Nakka said this scheme would be extended to other schools in a phased manner, encouraging students to spend time to learn Science for which they would earn also. This is likely remove fear, provide them confidence to improve their learning ability, he added.
