By Melissa Simpson Supplies: 2-4 oz of worsted weight yarn Darning Needle US 6, 16 inch needles US 8, 16 inch needles 1 stitch marker Gauge: 5 spi Fit: slight negative ease (tight fitting beanie) Sizing: 14 (16, 18, 20, 22, 24) inches (nb through adult)

Pattern:
Cast on using smaller needles: 68 (76, 88, 96, 108, 116) stitches Place marker and join in the round and knit in 2x2 ribbing for 2 (2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3, 3.5) inches Switch to larger needles and knit for 3(3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5) in stockinet stitch Begin Crown Shaping: (dont worry about extra stitches at the end of the round, just add them in when the decreases allow) Row 1: *knit 7, k2tog* repeat till end of round Row 2: and all even rows: knit Row 3: *knit 6, k2tog* repeat till end of the round Row 5: *knit 5, k2tog* repeat till end of the round Row 7: *knit 4, k2tog* repeat till end of the round Row 9: *knit 3, k2tog* repeat till end of the round Row 11: *knit 2, k2tog* repeat till end of the round Row 13: *knit 1, k2tog* repeat till end of the round Row 15: * k2tog* repeat till end of the round Cut yarn leaving a 8 inch tail and weave it through the remaining stitches on the needle and pull tight. Weave in ends.

Hat can be worn with the ribbing folded up or down to cover the ears.
