* Objective:-

To study the method for determining the normal consistency and time of set of Portland cement. * Equipments:1- Vicat Apparatus. 2- Needle ( D=1mm ). 3- Needle ( D=10mm ). * Procedure:1- Normal Consistency:We mix the sample of 500 gm with clean water for 30 s then we hide it also for 30 s after that we knead by hand for 1.5 min from the paste into a ball using gloved hands and toss it six times from hand to hand. Then we will take the sample of cement and put it in the " Vicat Apparatus " with needle 10 mm and wait for 30 s then check up the penetration. We will do it again with different weight of water until we reach a penetration 10 mm. Weight of cement:- 500 gm. Trial % of water Weight of water ( gm ) Plunger penetration 28 % 140 gm 7 mm 30 % 150 gm 30 mm 29 % 145 gm 11 mm

We can see from the table that the best trial is ( NO. 3 )

Because we reach a penetration 11 mm by using 29% water.

2- Setting time:We make another sample of cement with 29% of water and we put it in Vicat Apparatus with needle 1 mm and we will check up the penetration every 15 min. We will do again it until we reach a penetration 25 mm.

Cement sample weight:- 500 gm. Percentage of water:- 29%. Weight of water:- 145 gm. No. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Time each 15 min 0 15 30 45 60 75 Penetration of 1-mm needle 40 40 40 36 36 33

90 105 120

29 27 25

We see from the table that the time of initial setting time is 120 min. From the initial setting time we can calculate the final setting time by this equation:Final setting time ( min ) = 90 + 1.2 ( initial setting time ) Final setting time = 90 + 1.2 120 = 234 min.

* Discussion and conclusion:It important to know the percentage of water in cement to make a homogeneous concrete and knowing the initial setting time make us able to move concrete from place to another. There are many errors in the experiment such as:-

1- If part of sample fall in the floor we pick it up. 2- We didnt mix the sample well. 3- Some of cement fall down on the floor , then the cement weight will be less. 4- not take the exact weight of water and the cement.
