The more proficient children are in the language they are reading, the more ready they learn

to read. Support for learning English is support for learning to read. English language learners need reading just above their level of understanding and that is interesting. Selecting reading materials need careful considerations. Students need books at different reading level to meet their changing needs in reading. Beginners in reading English can be taught using a method called guided reading. (what is guided reading?) According to Fountas & Finnell (1996) students need instructional support so that they can expand their competence across a greater variety of increasing challenging texts. Planning and organizing is very important. Guided reading involves the teacher and students. Readers are monitored (by whom?) to identify their reading level using a running record. (what is a running record?) Guided reading use 'bookwalk' wherein teachers and students look for a book and read to predict what will happen next in the story. This approach is very appropriate for English language learners to enhance their vocabulary, understanding and individual instructions. (individual instructions-what do you mean?)It builds their self-confidence to participate in group discussion or activities they will meet in the future. Helping English language learners become active learners of English is a key to become successful students in performing well inside the classroom. Instructional conversations about the text they are reading are essential for new learners as they are for English Language Learners. It is necessary for their Literacy development to realize if they fully understood what they are reading.
