Emily O`Connell`s response to her own Literacy Memoir

I think that this person plays the role oI a victim in their literacy memoir. She shares
many stories about how she used to love to read and write in her younger years, but aIter having
a bad English class, her opinion on writing has turned totally negative. She said that she used to
want to be an author or a journalist, but her eleventh grade English teacher destroyed her
conIidence and made her hate writing.
This person gives a little narrative in some parts oI the memoir, describing her experience
and enjoyment with writing when she was a child, and then explaining the things that happened
in her English 3 class that made her miserable and turned her whole outlook on writing around. I
also think that in other parts oI the literacy memoir, the person only gives brieI descriptions oI
the writing experiences that she doesn`t Ieel are that important.
This person seems to value how important writing and reading is in society and she
knows that it is hard to be successIul without a strong writing background. I think that because
this person has such a low conIidence about her writing, she is missing out on a lot oI
opportunities to grow as a writer and explore diIIerent types oI writing. I think that because this
person used to enjoy writing, she deIinitely has the potential to become a much better writer iI
she can get back into the swing oI things.
Throughout most oI this paper, this person has a negative tone towards writing and
reading. It almost seems like she has given up on it, but by the end oI this literacy memoir, she
seems like she really hopes to gain a more positive outlook on English and like she wants to
become a more talented writer. Based on what I have read. I think that this person needs to open
up their mind to new ideas this semester. She needs to work on rebuilding her conIidence and she
needs to learn how to get better at analyzing her rough draIts and adding to/editing things to
make her papers better. I think that iI this person tries to Iorget about her past experiences in
English and she gives the class her best eIIort, she should be able to succeed greatly this semester
and grow in her writing skills.
