Economic Analysis: Hait i is a Caribbean country that is located in the western one-third of the island of Hispaniola, between the Caribbean Sea and the North At lant ic Ocean, west of the Dominican Republic. Hait i is a free market economy that has the benefit of low labor costs and tariff-free access of their exports to the US. Hait is major exports include apparel, manufactures, oils, cocoa, mangoes, and coffee. Their major imports include food, manufactured goods, machinery and transport equipment, fuels, and raw materials. Sadly, Hait i suffers from povert y, corruption, and poor access to education. Their economy suffered immensely in January 2010, when they experienced a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that destroyed much of its capital cit y, Port-au-Prince, along wit h its neighboring areas. Hait i, already one of the poorest countries, had damages from the earthquake that caused the countrys GDP to contract an est imated 5.1% in 2010. Due to their misfortunes, they rely on formal internat ional economic assistance for fiscal sustainabilit y, wit h over half of it s annual budget coming from outside sources.
