Dimitar Sasselov deals with studies on the relationship between matter and radiation. His research interests range from the evolution of hydrogen and helium in the early universe during the construction of the stars, pulsars and to the determination of distances to other galaxies.

Prof.Saselov and his collaborators developed the method of transit demand by him in 2003 they discovered the most distant planet yet OGLE-TR-56b in the constellation Sagittarius. Late they have found 706 "candidates" -- some of which further research may prove to be planets with Earth-like geochemical characteristics.

Transit searches offer greater efficiency, enabling astronomers to examine many more stars in a short period of time.

It also opens the door for studying hundreds of thousands of new very distant stars like OGLE-TR-56, located 5,000 light-years away. Transit searches also can detect
