1. Theory Rectifiers convert a.c. electrical energy to d.c. one. Controlled rectifiers are applied when their output voltage must be controlled. In controlled thyristor rectifiers the general rectifying element is the half-controlled conventional thyristor.

The double phase connection provides two voltages e2a and e2b in anti-phase relative to the mid- point neutral N. In this circuit the load is fed via a thyristor in each supply line, the current being returned to the supply neutral N. A given thyristor can be fired during any time that its anode voltage is positive relative to the cathode. Thyristor VS1 can be fired into the on state at any time after e2a goes positive. The firing circuit are omitted from the connection diagram to avoid unnecessary confusion to the basic circuit but can be assumed

to produce a firing pulse into the respective thyristor gates. Each pulse is shown delayed by a phase angle , called controlling of firing delay angle, relative to the instant where diodes would conduct.

Single phase full-wave (double-way or bridge) controlled rectifier

In the fully controlled bridge rectifier the conduction does not take place until the thyristors are fired and in order the current to flow, thyristor VS1 and VS3 must be fired together, as must thyristors VS2 and vs4 in the next half circle. Each of the half controlled bridge rectifiers contains an inherent commutating diode. The half controlled connections cannot be used as line commutated inverters, only fully-controlled connection allows a reversal of the average direct voltage.
