The Boxer Rebellion: Chinas War against Foreign Powers

Jovana Cristiani Junior Division Individual Website

I chose my topic my topic from the suggested topics my teacher gave the class at the beginning of History Fair. I was completely stumped, and had no idea on what topic to do for History Fair. I was at first going to do The Jungle, but multiple students had already chosen that topic and I wanted to be original. I finally saw the Boxer Rebellion, and asked my teacher for some insight on this topic, and if it was good choice for History Fair. She told me about the events, and highly recommended to do this topic because no one had done this topic and there was so much history. That is what made me choose the Boxer Rebellion as my History Fair topic. The Boxer Rebellion was not an easy topic to research on. Not many books on my topic where found in the libraries, so I had to conduct a majority of my research through the internet. The internet though had a lack of primary sources for my topic though but luckily my teacher had shown me Library of Congress. When I searched there hundreds of primary sources snd secondary sources appeared, so I conducted most of my research through Library of Congresss website, and the single book I found in library (which was also filled with tons of primary and secondary sources.) The presentation category I selected was a website. I chose a website because the past two years I have been doing History Fair I had chosen exhibit, and I wanted to do something different. I know there were multiple other topics to choose, but many of my classmates told me that a website was an enjoyable category because it came with many opportunities. I created my project on Weebly through NHDs link on their website. I used multiple picture and placed them in slideshows, I uploaded documents, and created interactive timelines.

My topic The Boxer Rebellion relates to the NHD theme Revolution, Reaction, Reform because of the series of events that took place. In my topic the Boxers revolted against the foreign influences invading China. The reaction to their rampage, and brutal killing sprees was fierce consequences and the departure of troops from many countries in attempt to stop the Boxers. After finally defeating the Boxers China decided to pull out of many trades with foreign countries, and made many foreign missionaries leave. They reformed the issue with the Boxers by lossening tie with other countries so this chain of event wouldnt occur again.
