The Madras Players looks back on 50 years of theatre in ‘Madras’

Players, was one of the first founders
of the group. She recalls: “The Ma-
dras Dramatic Society (MDS), in
1955, was the only theatre group in
the city that had only Westerners.
Through certain obligations, I was
forced to act in one of their plays.
And I was asked to play a maid, just
because of the colour of my skin.
The next role was of a hula hula
dancer, complete with Polynesian
grass skirt.”
After the experience, several ac-
tors, which included Gayathri Krish-
naswamy, Tambi Kadambavanam
and Snehalatha Reddy amongst oth-
ers, who were part of The British
Council play-reading group, felt the
need for plays which Indians could
be comfortable in, such as A Phoenix
Too Frequent (1955-1960), Twelfth
Night (1955-1960) and Hassan
(1960-1964).
“And before MDS split up, they
donated their huge props and make-
up to us, which was quite helpful
over the years.”

Again, for theatre enthusiasts, it is
P.C. Ramakrishna’s name, face and
voice that one associates with The
Madras Players. His entry into the
group began when he watched a
play in 1969, directed by Ammu
Mathews, who was the President of
The Madras Players for 37 years. “A
play reading later, I debuted in The
Crucible (1969), which incidentally
was also my last play with Girish
Karnad, who was one of the first to
join the group.”

tended towards playwrights who
were interested in regional theatre.
From the 1970s and onwards, it was
the partnership between Yamuna,
Vishalam Ekambaram and Bhagi-
rathi (Bhagyam) Narayanan whom
P.C. called “the awesome three-
some”. P.C. details in his book, Bring
Down the Houselights: 50 Years of
The Madras Players, that Tamil the-
atre and stage fascinated Bhagyam.
Poile Sengupta’s Mangalam (1996),
which Bhagyam directed, provided
the challenge of bringing “the ethos
of a small town near Kumbakonam
and the trauma of an orthodox Brah-
min family through a play written in
English”.
Vimal Bhagat is another actor who
was prominent in The Madras
Players from the 70s through the
80s, who in Calcutta shared the
stage with Amitabh

group to translate a regional play in-

And that is essentially what The
Madras Players is striving for. “Why

of Bhumi, an NGO based in Chennai,

Cambodian and Thai negotiators on Monday resumed
talks aimed at resolving a long-running border dispute
which last month spilled over into fighting that
claimed four lives. The officials met for three days of
negotiations in an attempt to end a four-month
military stand-off. “We hope we finally find an
agreement to reach the end of tensions,” Cambodian
foreign affairs ministry spokesman Koy Kuong told
AFP. The foreign ministers of both countries are
scheduled to meet on Wednesday. Shortly after a
round of talks failed last month, troops from the two
countries clashed on October 15 on disputed land near
Cambodia’s ancient Preah Vihear temple.

dozen secret strikes
US special forces have conducted about a dozen secret
operations against Al-Qaeda and other Islamic militants in
Pakistan, Syria and other countries under broad war-waging
authority given them by the administration of President
George W. Bush, The New York Times reported on its
website late Sunday. Citing unnamed senior US officials, the
newspaper said the authority was contained in a classified
order signed by then-defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld in
early 2004 with the approval of President Bush. The order
gave the military permission to attack Al-Qaeda and other
hostile targets anywhere in the world, even in countries not
at war with the United States.

Afghan president sacks transport minister
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has fired his transport minister
for “negligence and for carrying out suspicious activities,” the
presidential palace said on Monday. Hamidullah Qaderi’s removal
comes amid growing complaints about endemic corruption in
Karzai’s government. Karzai has been leading Afghanistan since
U.S.-led and Afghan forces overthrew the Taliban in 2001. The
decision was taken during a cabinet meeting and Qaderi would
face prosecution, the palace said in a statement. Qaderi’s removal
comes less than a month after Karzai reshuffled some members
of his cabinet, which involves former leaders of armed groups
and some Western-educated technocrats.

involving a nuclear-powered submarine from Russia’s Pacific Fleet in the Sea of Japan,

career on Monday and with it
came an end of an era; an era
when, at last, Indian cricketers
shrugged off their good-boy im-
age and took the field with a fire
in their belly and an eye on the
spoils.
Sourav Ganguly changed the
way Indians played cricket and for
that you can either love him or
hate him. For millions of Indians
world over, he will hold a special
place. But back in his city, Kolkata,
he was much more than just a
cricketer. Ganguly was a source of
inspiration, someone who gave
Bengalis a new hero, a new na-
tional icon. That part of India
hardly had any icons since the
passing away of the great poet Ra-
bindranath Tagore. You had sing-
ers like Kishore Kumar and
directors like Hrishikesh Mukher-
jee ruling Bollywood but they
were looked upon more as Mum-
baikars than true Bengalis.

off. Nakul’s journey to where he is at
present was no bed of roses. He took
criticism without flinching.

The diet regime
Kadhalil Vizhunthen came Nakuls’s
way while he was shooting for Boys.
Prasad, the director of the movie, gave
him strict orders to reduce weight. And
from there it was one hell of a journey
when I was put on a strict diet I felt
awful. The process of weight loss start-
ed when I was filming for Boys. Once
Boys was done I had to reduce 10 kgs
and that I did in 21 days. I lived only on
sprouts for one month.”
Do or die
Kadhalil Vizhunthen is close to Na-
kul’s heart, considering it was his first
film as hero. “It was a do or die sit-
uation for both Prasad and myself. We
decided on the very first day that this
film could either ignite or ruin our ca-
reers. So we shot on a trial-and-error
basis and were not in a hurry to com-
plete the film. And I am happy all our
hard work has paid off.”
Talking about the efforts that went
into making the character Saba come
alive on screen, he says, “It was a very
big challenge. I had to project Saba in
two ways; his life with the heroine and
life without her. The film shows the
feelings of a true lover and how the
love changes people.” Ask him how
