Embedded system in Agriculture- Soil moisture Estimation for automated Irrigation system based on WSN (WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORK)

ABSTRACT

Automated agriculture which consists of WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) to monitor and control the irrigation and a management sub-system to manage the WSN and provide various and convenient services to consumers with hand-held devices. An automated irrigation system based on soil moisture sensing was installed and tested to assess its field performance. A soil moisture sensor monitored the prevailing soil moisture status. Once irrigation started the instrument kept on monitoring the soil moisture level and when it reached zero tension, it switched off irrigation. This system could save as much as 20% of water compared to conventional irrigation.

Existing System:
Irrigation by help of freshwater resources in agricultural areas has a crucial importance. Because of highly increasing demand for freshwater, optimal usage of water resources has been provided with greater extent by automation technology and its apparatus such as solar power, conventional irrigation, sensors and remote control. Traditional instrumentation based on discrete and wired solutions, presents many difficulties on measuring and control systems especially over the large geographical areas

Proposed System:
In irrigation water management, irrigation water use represents a substantial opportunity for agriculture water savings. Automation of irrigation systems, based on Soil Moisture Sensors Systems (SMSS) with WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) has the potential to provide maximum water use efficiency by maintaining soil moisture at optimum levels. The objective of Automate Irrigation is to evaluate the performance of soil moisture sensors under field conditions during growing season. This evaluation to be conducted with regard to accuracy; precision; quickness of the response to moisture variation. Moreover to quantify the easiness of use, this encompasses installing and operating the instrument as well as interpreting the readings.
