Medieval Exam The exam will be worth 100 points, and it will cover Dante's Inferno, assigned cantos,

Machiavelli, assigned chapters, and Everyman. Dante 1. Know circles of hell, who goes there, and what the punishment is. 2. Be familiar with the primary characters Dante meets in those assigned circles. They were discussed in class. 3. Know the literary stylistic characteristics of the poem; type of verse used, number of cantos, etc. 4. Know what an Allegory is, and its associated qualities (see Glossary) 5. Know famous (discussed in class) quotes. 6. Read it. Machiavelli 1.Understand the central ideas in the assigned excerpts. 2. Be familiar with famous quotes (see Assignments/Machiavelli/Quotes handout) 3. Know background on Machiavelli and the historical period. (see Powerpoint in Assignments/Machiavelli). 4. Read it. Everyman 1. Be able to identify quotes from the play. 2. Know the plot/action of the play. 3. Study Powerpoint in Assignments/Everyman. 4. Read it. Essay Question: You will be comparing and contrasting Dante's Inferno and Everyman. Items you might look at (not an exhaustive list. . .) 1. Central theme of the work--what is the goal of the writer here? 2. They are both allegories, but the differ. How alike, and how different? 3. Character development in both? 4. The journey 5. The tone of the work; dark, upbeat, religious, comic touches, etc. 6. Symbolism
