ECOSOC ACCREDITATION (UNITED NATIONS) Introduction to ECOSOC status According to the UN Charter, Article 71, any NGO has

the right to try to obtain a status within the bodies of the United Nations (ECOSOC, UNESCO, UNICEF). The consultative relationship with ECOSOC is governeted today by ECOSOC resolution 96/31. Who is Eligible? Consultative status can be awarded with international, national, or regional organizations. To be eligible, an NGO must have been in existence for minimum two years, must have established HQ, a democratically adopted constitution, authority to speak for its members, a representative structure, appropriate mechanism of accountability and democratic and transparent decisionmaking processes. Threee categories of status: general consultative status, special consultative status and roster status. A. General consultative status: is reserved for large international NGOs (their agenda covers almost al of the workload of the ECOSOC and its bodies). B. Special consultative status: is granted for NGOs who have a pecial competence in one area. These NGOs tend to be smaller and more recently established. C.Roster Status: these NGOs tend to have a rather narrow and/or technical. How to apply?
