LOG O

Parallel mechanism

James Watt
(19 January 1736 25 August 1819)

A Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer who improves the Newcomen steam engine Initially worked as a maker of mathematical instruments, but soon became interested in steam engines.

Characteristics
The cranks are equal in length. The cranks are parallel to each other. Have a predictable and repeatable relative motion. It usually form a parallelogram.

PARALLEL CRANK FOUR BAR LINKAGE

Characteristics

The two cranks are equal in length. The distance of the fixed link to each other is equal in length of the coupler. The coupler is also parallel to the frame at all time. The input is a rotating motion.

Application

Other Application

Pantograph

Mechanical linkage connected in a special manner based on parallelogram so that thy move in a fixed to each other.

Christoph Scheiner
(1575 1650)

Physicist and astronomer, who construct the first pantograph in 1603. He used the device to duplicate or enlarge diagrams.

LOG O

Toggle Mechanism

Toggle mechanisms are used to obtain large force amplification . Are four-bar linkages that are dimensioned so that they can fold and lock.

F/P= (Ay/Ax) cos

Where: F is output , P is input and F/P is mechanical advantage

E G

x B y

P F C F

Derivation:

-F(Ax) + P(Ay) = 0 F(Ax) = P(Ay)

F = F/cos

TOGGLE POSITION

P A F B C F

Given: Ax = 5in Ay = 10in = 30 F/P = (10/5)cos30 = 1.732

x B y

Assuming another angle: = 45 F/P = (10/5)cos45 = 1.414

P F C F

Therefore, as the angle increases the mechanical advantage decreases

E If AB = BC , ABC forming isosceles sliding block linkage and P is perpendicular to F G

P A

F
B

F/P = 1/2(tan) Derivation: 2(tan) = P/F
