Modal Verbs Advice (Past Tense) Sometimes we give advice for past events or situations.

. We do this so people can learn from their mistakes and make the right choices in the future. How many times have your parents told you what you should have done? If your parents are like mine; Id say the answer is countless times? You should have tidied your room. You should have done your homework. You ought to have done better in your exam. Advice for past situations is called retrospective advice. It also uses the three modal verbs: 1. Should 2. Ought 3. Would

1. Should
Form: SHOULD + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE (You should have done your homework) SHOULDNT + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE (You shouldnt have hit your sister)

2. Ought to
Form: OUGHT TO + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE (We ought to have invited our neighbours to our party. I cant believe we forgot)

3. Would
Form: IF + SUBJECT + PAST TENSE + WOULD + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE (If I were you I would have asked her to marry me) (If I were you I wouldnt have told my boss he was stupid)
