INTRODUCTION
When size of structure falls below 100 nm, dramatic changes in propertys can occur. QUANTUM WELL : If one dimension of the structure is reduced to nano-range, while the other dimension remain large.
QUANTUM WIRE: If two dimensions are so reduced , one remains large we get a quantum wire . QUANTUM DOT : When all the dimensions reduced to nanometer range .
WHY WORD .. QUANTUM As the size is reduced there is confinement of the charge carrier, as in case of the quantum confinement. i:e change in properties arises due to quantum mechanical nature of physics.
PREPERATION OF NANOSTRUCTURES
BOTTOM UP APPROCH: Processes carried out by sequence of chemical reactions, controlled catalytically. BOTTOM UP APPROACH: The process start with a large scale object or a pattern and gradually reduces its dimension(s). The process is accomplished by technique called Lithography.
LITHOGRAPHY
In this process, the radiation shines through a template on to a surface coated with a radiation sensitive resist. The resist is the removed and surface is chemically treated to produce the nanostructure. TYPICAL RESIST : Polymethyl methacrylate (Polymer) THE PROCESS The process starts a square well located on a substrate. The final product is either a quantum dot or a quantum wire.
MORE COMPLEX STRUCTURES Lithography can be used to make more complex structure. For example the process can be repeated to produce the stack of quantum dots arranged in a array.
A P P L I C AT I O N
The advantage of fabricating such a quantum dot array is that it produces a greatly enhanced photo-luminescent output of light The figure below shows a PL spectrum from a quantum dot array that is more than 100 times stronger than the spectrum obtained from initial multiple quantum wells.
