First Grade students learning the importance of recycling.

Down and Dirty with Science

March First Graders got down and dirty on April 17th to learn about the importance of recycling and reusing materials. Mad Scientist Bill of the Lehigh Valley Mad Science Program presented The Dirt on Garbage that gave students a hands-on opportunity to learn how various materials decompose over time. Students sorted pictures of everyday items into categories to see how long they thought each would take to break down. They were shocked to learn that Styrofoam containers never break down and even an orange peel can take up to a year! ! Students were then given a Styrofoam packing piece and were told to hold out their hands. A mystery liquid was poured onto each piece. In seconds, the Styrofoam transformed into a small, sticky ball. Students had to guess the liquid. Nail polish remover actually has a chemical compound in it that breaks down Styrofoam. This is a way to conserve precious space in a landll. Students were also able to work in teams to build a creation of their choice using everyday materials that may have otherwise wound up in the trash. We want to send a big THANK YOU to our PTA for making this fantastic presentation possible. The students learned so much from this hour-long workshop. Now they each know how they can make a difference for our Earth!

Aloha!!!!!
This April students traveled to Hawaii for our Spring Bookfair . It was Buy One Get One Free. The students were able to purchase an item and get another for the same price or less free. We had some very smart shoppers that got the most for the money! Along with the Bookfair, the PTA did a book give away for any student who was not able to purchase books at the Bookfair. Students were able to choose two gently used books from the hallway. Over 250 books were given to students. Between the books purchased and the book give away our students are building great libraries. Keep up the reading!!
