Combustion in boiler A boiler is a device that plays important role in a power plant.

It transfers the heat that generated from combustion of municipal solid waste to water and produces saturated steam as the output. There are many types of boiler available in the market for power plant generation. However, to burn municipal solid waste as fuel, fluidized bed boiler system is recommended. Fluidized bed technology has been started up for over 15 years in United States. It is a well established system that operates based on the fluidization process. Its working principle is as below:1. A bed of Silica sand is being held on the grate. 2. When the upward flow of air is supplied, the bed of silica sand will behave like fluid. As the velocity of air stream is increased, the bed material will become more excited to flow and mix freely. 3. Then, by using start-up fuel, the sand bed is heated to 400 C. 4. The fuel such as biomass, municipal solid waste is supplied to the bed with screw feeder. 5. The hot sand bed will transfer heat to the fuel, so that the fuel will be gasified. 6. Finally, the produced gas will be flew on top and supplied with extra air for exothermic reaction to boil water in the boiler. A Fluidized Bed Municipal Solid Waste Water Boiler 75T/3.82 MPa produced by Kenneth L. Maloney, PHD, INC is chosen to be operated in our power plant. This is a Circulating Fluidized Bed boiler (CFD) where it able to burn mixture of municipal solid waste and coal. This boiler is chosen because it able to produce 3.82 Mpa steam at 450 C and able to generate up to 75 tons of steam per hour which are required in order to generate 15MW of electricity. Other specifications of the selected boiler are as below:Daily Garbage Treated Super Heated Steam Pressure Rated Steam Generation Fee Water Temperature Flue Gas Exit Temperature Super Heated Steam Temperature Hydraulic Testing Pressure Boiler Designed Efficiency Designed Fuel Composition Ratio of Garbage and Coal Particulate size of garbage 500 tons / day 3.82 Mpa 75 tons / hour 150 C 165 C 450 C 5.3 Mpa 82.5 % Garbage and coal 8:2 Combustible < 150mm Incombustible < 30mm Ratio of Primary to Secondary Air 5:5 Table X: Specification of Fluidized Bed Municipal Solid Waste Water Boiler 75T/3.82 MPa
