Notes:
Cigarette smoke is extremely dangerous to the health of teens, as well as smokers and nonsmokers of all ages. The smoke consists of more than 4,800 chemical substances, and about 70 of them can lead to cancer, according to the American Lung Association. Teen smokers are a major concern because they are more likely to smoke regularly as adults than people who begin smoking at an older age, which increases their chances of developing smoking-related health issues.

When your parents were young, people could buy cigarettes and smoke pretty much anywhere! Even in hospitals! Ads for cigarettes were all over the place. Today we're more aware about how bad smoking is for our health. Smoking is restricted or banned in almost all public places and cigarette companies are no longer allowed to advertise on TV, radio, and in many magazines. The differences between subjective feelings of those who smoke and those who dont are shown in behavioral changes that are more apparent in teens than adults. Teens seem to be more abrasive when smoking or they feel like they are older and wiser when they smoke. Why do they smoke when we have seen billions of dollars spent on antismoking campaigns? The American Lung Association estimates that every minute four thousand eight hundred teens will take their first drag off a cigarette. Of those four thousand eight hundred, about two thousand will go on to be chain smokers. The fact that teen smoking rates are steadily increasing is disturbing. We are finding out that about 80% of adult smokers started smoking as teenager

Well, well have to agree. Most of the really bad smoking-related diseases are diseases that people get when they get older. But heres what you dont hear so much about: smoking starts causing the health problems that can lead to those bad diseases almost as soon as someone takes that first puff from a cigarette! And thats not all. There are lots of other health problems that crop up right away too.

There are over 4,000 chemicals in a single cigarette, some of which are highly poisonous. Examples include naphthalene, which is used in moth repellent; acetone, the main component of nail polish remover; butane, a constituent of lighter fluid; and formaldehyde, used in embalming. Cigarettes also contain nicotine, a highly addictive stimulant that causes physical and psychological

dependency.
