Promoting Positive Mental Health Culturally competent approaches for community-based practitioners

One-day Seminar A new training event that aims to equip community-based health, social care and education practitioners with the skills to understand and better support the mental health needs of service users from diverse backgrounds. The course makes use of outcomes from recent qualitative research undertaken by one of the trainers. Delegates can expect to refresh their knowledge of mental health, explore perceived risk and resilience factors, and broaden their understanding of personcentred approaches to service provision. By the end of this course delegates will: Have refreshed their knowledge and understanding of mental health difficulties and disorders in adults and young people Have a new toolbox of evidence-informed and culturallycompetent strategies that they can use in their work settings Be aware of local mental health services to support their practice Have an insight into the cultural needs that may underpin the mental health of Black, Asian and minority ethnic service-users Have a better understanding of the creative approaches that can be used in addressing the mental health needs of their service users

Your trainers Stacy Moore BSc PGCE MSc CPsychol. is a chartered educational psychologist who has experience in delivering professional services to schools, colleges, local authorities, charities and voluntary sector organisations in London, the West Midlands and the Caribbean. She is particularly interested in community psychology, child and adolescent mental health and working in partnership with parents. Stacy is director of Inner Circles Educational Psychology, a community-facing organisation that supports learners to manage and overcome social, emotional and cognitive barriers to education. Sonia Moore Dip Couns. Cert Ed. is a trained person-centred Counsellor and Tutor with over 12 years experience of working with the voluntary sector, community groups, and colleges of Further Education. Sonias work as a counsellor underpins the work she carries out as a mental health practitioner in addressing the needs and focusing on the strength and capacity of adults and vulnerable groups. Sonia has taught on a range of personal and professional development courses within the Local Authority. As course director and lead trainer for Moore Options skills development training, an NCFE approved centre, Sonia has written and taught extensively on a number of bespoke and accredited programmes. Ramona Kauth PGDip Couns. specialises in using person-centred art therapy skills. She is director of Ladywood Counselling, where she has delivered counselling for the last four years. Prior to this she worked for ten years as a counsellor in Student Services at South Birmingham College. Her approach acknowledges that using art alongside counselling can help the client see their whole situation more clearly and quickly. Areas of interest include: working with clients with Aspergers Syndrome, awareness of spiritual life, supporting refugees, bereavement, life changes and challenges.
