through formal and specializing training.
(2) They have guided by standards of professional practice and laws.
(3) They are formally identified members of the helping professions in
promoting growth and personal change in thier clients.
Counselors guided by rules and regulations or
what is called Code of Ethics .In high recognition
of the rules of counselors In the Philippines, the
Guidance and counseling Act of 2004 was
promulgated to support the improvement,
advancement, and protection of the guidance
and counseling proffession.
RULES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR

- The counseling profession evolved a response to


various change; economics, social, and technical. Some
examples of these are the increasing number of overseas
workers, many of whom are parents better facilitation of
student learning by addressing their behavioural concerns,
progress in knowledge and use of technology in the
classroom, and cultural diversity in the classrooms by having
students from either different regions in the country or
different countries in the world.
The role of professional counselor is important in school to assist students in thier academic well
being. Therefore, professional counselor function as follows:

1. PROVIDERS OF INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP COUNSELING SERVICES


- School counselors take an active role in counseling
not only in helping individuals

2. DEVELOPMENT CLASSROOM GUIDANCE SPECIALIST


- Professional counselor also prepare lesson and
implement guidance instructions to students. These
executed by developing clear and measurable objectives to
meet needs of the students.
3. LEADERS AND ADVOCATES OF ACADEMIC
SUCCESS
- Professional school counselors have an ethical
responsibility of promoting academic success by helping
students identify barriers affecting school performance.
4. CAREER DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST
- Professional counselor also provide activities that will prepare
students for the demands and the requirements of their choosen
profession.
5. AGENTS OF DIVERSITY AND MULTICULTURALISM
- Professional counselor are trained to deal with and address the needs of people from
different cultural backgrounds. At the same time, the counselor will also carry out a
program for the filipino students, aimed at helping them demonstrate hospitality, respect,
and understanding for their foreign classmates.

6. ADVOCATES OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AND STUDENTS-AT-RISK


- Professional counselor give attention to students with special need such as athletes,
honor students, students with absentee parents, those with learning disabilities and other
clinically diagnosed students.

7. ADVOCATES OF A SAFE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
- Conflicts, which may lead to violence, happen in some
school communities. For instance, there are issues on
bullying physical verbal, cyber, psychological and etc.

8. SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY COLLABORATION SPECIALIST
- To ensure students wholistics development and success, professional
school counselors work in collaboration with the other school
authorities and with the parents of the students.

PSYCHOLOGIST
- Psychologist provide counseling and psychotherapy to promote a
healthy mental state. Psychotherapy is known as the use of
psychological approaches, such as talk therapy which allows the
client to tell whatever dis in his or her mind. White psychotherapy is
provided to those which mental health problems or disorders.
PSYCHIATRIST
- Psychiatrist specialize on the treatment of mental health disorders and believe that this
maybe resolved by the use of pharmacological interventions. Usually, psychiatrist require
physical examination such as complete blood test and analysis to determine phycological
causes of the clients condition.
NEUROLOGIST
- Is a branch of medicine that deals with the study and treatment of
disorders of the nervous system. When client affected by
neurological promplems, such as speech and language disorders
refer him or her to a neurologist.
SOCIAL WORKER
- Professional counselor may also refer clients to social workers specific concerns
related to housing emergencies or crisis situations may be attended by a social
worker, upon referral of the professional counselor.
