A councilor encourages a learner to finish all his requirements to graduate in SHS. 2. A councilor consistently displays a calm and pleasant appearance. 3. A councilor listens attentively to her client and asks questions that leads the client to a good decision-making. 4. A councilor monitors the progress of a child in terms of attaining the goal set in the beginning of the school year. 5. A councilor calls the attention of a teacher who is fond of embarrassing her students in front of the whole class. SPECIFIC AREAS TO WORK AS COUNSELOR Hospitals - Counselors are hired to assist patients overcome various psychological and behavioral issues. Rehabilitation Centers - Counselors serve as detox specialists to patients battling substance (drug) abuse. Mental Health Facilities - Counselors provide one-on-one or group therapy sessions to individuals diagnosed to have mental health issues. SPECIFIC AREAS TO WORK AS COUNSELOR Prisons - Counselors provide one-on-one or group therapy sessions to individuals who are jailed. Businesses - Counselors improve company-costumer relationship as well as designing and conducting training programs. Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) - Counselors provide an array of counseling services centered on mental health, rehabilitation, substance abuse, and other areas of social work. SPECIFIC AREAS TO WORK AS COUNSELOR Schools or Educational Systems - Counselors help learners to better navigate the stresses of growing up and successfully completing their studies. ACTIVITY 1. COUNSELOR’S GUIDE IN DEALING WITH PATIENTS 1.PRINCIPLE OF INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCE OR UNIQUENESS As a counselor, you look at your client as unique which means that there is no one else who is completely the same as he or she. Comparing your client with another is a violation of the very principle of counseling. A counselor treats and accepts a client like a true friend. 2.PRINCIPLE OF HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT
A counselor sees a client as individual with
body, mind and soul. You get to know the person in every aspect such as physical, mental, spiritual, moral, social, and emotional. You get to know his or her past and present as well as his or her aspirations, plans and dreams. 3.PRINCIPLE OF FLEXIBILITY A counselor is always open to changes and adjustments in the duration of the process. There is no „one size fits all‟ principle in counseling. One should be patient, creative, and persevering in every step of the counseling process. It is a continuous search for answers and possible solutions. 4.PRINCIPLE OF JUSTICE
Everyone deserves a fair and equal treatment.
More so, the client in a counseling process. A counselor makes sure that no one gets abused or unnecessarily hurt during the process. Agreements should be followed and decisions must be based on laws and rights of individuals.
