2-D and 3-D Shapes

Subject: Math Grade Level: 3 Ohio Academic Content Standards:

Geometry and Spatial Sense: 1. Analyze and describe properties of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects using terms such as vertex, edge, angle, side and face. Standard 1: Nature of Technology Benchmark A: 3. Demonstrate the use of technology in the classroom Standard 4: Technology and Communication Applications: Benchmark B: 4. Use graphics and text within a slide show (e.g., create a presentation about Ohio's state bird, symbol or flag, as a presentation using pictures). Objectives: Students will be able to describe properties of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes using terms such as vertex, edge, angle, side and face. Students will be able to demonstrate use of PowerPoint and use graphics and text within a slide show.

Materials: Shape handout, computers with PowerPoint and Internet, Teacher-made PowerPoint and worksheet for homework

Procedure: 1. Teacher will review shapes learned previously such as rectangle, triangle, octagon, square (all 2D) and cube, cylinder, sphere and pyramid (all 3-D). 2. Teacher will hand out a list of 2-D and 3-D shapes to students. 3. Teacher show the student the sample PowerPoint of 6 shapes (3 two-dimensional and 3 threedimensional). 4. The PowerPoint must include a picture of the shape, number of vertices, edges, angles, faces and sides.

5. Students will be able to pick their own six shapes. They will be working in partners and have inclass time to work. 6. Students will present their finished projects with the class so a variety of shapes are shown to all students. 7. Students will be assigned a worksheet for homework with shapes that they need to identify from the presentations. Assessment: Teacher will assess their PowerPoints and make sure the information is accurate. Also students presentations will be assessed for communication and technology use.
