Subtopic 1.

1 Importance of a Transport System in Some Multicellular Organism

Teacher's Note

Cell requirements include: receiving oxygen and nutrients eliminate carbon dioxide and other waste products For materials to move into and out of the cells, what is the major transport mechanism? Diffusion
#

Diffusion of materials is easy to occur for unicellular organisms but not to multicellular organisms.

Why? What is the problem?

#

Because
multicellular organisms too small TSA/V (total surface area/volume) ratio Diffusion process is limited The larger the organisms the smaller its TSA/V ratio and tougher for materials to diffuse to all parts of the body.
#

Then, how to solve this problem?

By having a transport (circulatory) system

Hot tips:
The larger the organism, the smaller its TSA/V ratio. The larger the TSA/V ratio, the faster diffusion occur.
