Denotation: Literally what you see (e.g. a person wearing a gold star) Connotation: What the possible meanings could be (e.g. they are Jewish)

Task 2: Representations

Representation: The way people, places, or events are presented to media audiences. Stereotype: A way of portraying a group of people through a few obvious characteristics, something they cant change e.g. gender, age, race, religion, regional identity. Archetype: An original model or ideal that has been imitated, a very typical example of a certain something or someone.

A) What stereotypes and archetypes have you seen in the media; list an example for each below. A) Read through the 4 reasons people use or consumer media (Blumler and Katz Audience Theory)

C) In the grid below, write the name of someone you know opposite each of the descriptions (at least 4). You will need to ask the person you name to fill in a questionnaire, so make sure it is someone you can get in touch with easily.

Task 5: TV Drama Analysis Essay

B) Analyse how the TV Drama appeals to its audience; focus on REPRESENTATIONS or GENRE in your answer. (Essay 1,000 words minimum including introduction and conclusion) All of the tasks in this booklet must be completed and submitted at the start of the course (first lesson). Failure to complete the tasks in full or submit them on time will jeopardise your success on the Media Studies A-Level course.
