Barrages Dean Marshall taught us how to get students to move and interact with the audience to create more of an entertaining show. The class was led by a lady who grew a Latino Arts program into a large program. The focus was on not treating students in inner city as cute but rather as excelling students and pushing them to their fullest potential. In addition, I learned ways to get the funding I need for my program. This talked about the logistics of putting on a rock concert in a public school program. Everything from hosting a band and copyright issues to the financial aspect and the preparation needed for your students. I learned what the best of the best from around the country can sound like under the direction of one of the most up and coming conductors in the country. Was able to figure out what popular arrangements of songs were easy enough for beginners and also sounded good. Honestly, I disagreed with about half of what this presenter said. Most of it felt like a sales pitch and unrelated to the students today (at least in my school). The handout he gave was more helpful than the presentation. The

handout brings up many good points to a successful program, which are not necessarily hidden truths but things teachers need to be reminded about. This session was very enlightening because it was presented by two experts on bow technique. I learned a lot of good group activities that relate to using a students natural hand shape to make the bow hold more comfortable and bowings more accurate. This session was completed over web cam by a lady who built a program in South Africa based on classical training mixed with native styles on teaching music. Much like alternative styles taught round the world, South African music is taught by rote originally. This session taught us how to incorporate simple South African tunes into our string classroom.

Found out most of the materials presented were free from Dr. Villasurdas website. Teachers need to understand that students muscles are still developing. We need to stay on top of teaching good posture. Listened to a great middle school from Fulton county Bernadette Scruggs talked about how learner centered had the same outcomes as teacher centered but the students got a more hands on experience. Talked about how general music programs in middle and high school need to focus around the students interest to make a more engaging environment. How to use everyday items you find in the store to add a little flare. It really got me thinking about the educational entertainment side of teaching orchestra. Small things that you can do early on to in a students beginning years that get them play Lydian and Dorian scales.

You should be able to conduct to the music and be the best musician in the room. Really need to be more aware when conducting. Learned about the Vice President of GMEA candidates and got a chance to hear the Turtle Island String Quarter. Talked about how music that we teach needs to be taught the way it is supposed to sound, not the way it is written on the page. Got a chance to play through some of the new pieces. Some of the conductors were there as well so they talked about the pieces briefly. Got to hear a lovely program from our county Explored a great new method book with the authors of the book. It focused on getting the cellos and bass shifting early on to prevent injury as well as implanting National standards into the book.
