Description of the approach


Encourage the young learner to read story book (children stories), especially pupils in the kindergarten
Example: storybook, drawing and coloring book, cut and paste book and beginning-toread-and write-book

Application of the approach in the class


4 activities: Interactive story reading session Reading aloud session Playing the interactive storybook computer game Retell the story

Sample lesson using the approach

Advantages
Using storybook, it can attract learner through the cover, the story, colorful alphabet chart, the text, the visuals, the different font size, etc Learner can read the storybooks together with friends, siblings, parent Learner can imagine and draw what they have read Learner also can imitate the sound according to the character in the storybook

Can help learner to internalize the rhythm and the intonation of the text Learn the story grammar of our society and cultural Leaner predict what was going to happen in the story and help them to develop early problem solving skill Leaner become more aware of the text, meaning of the words and help them to see the connection with everyday life

Disadvantages
Some of the keywords in the text/storybooks use unfamiliar words and difficult to learner to understand Effective readers are also found to be selective in working out words meaning, but young learner try to decipher every word, makes them face difficulties in reading understanding Have to aware of many other things in the book and the content must suitable to young level Teacher who teach reading must have a sense of awareness because some of young learners did not want to read the text at all. So, teacher must have alternative to attract learners to read story book
