REMEMBER
+ TO: I remembered to do something (inside the situation, before talking about it). E.g.: I remembered to lock the door when I left but I forgot to shut the windows.

+ ING: I did it and now I remember this (after the situation). E.g.: Im absolutely sure I locked the door. I clearly remember locking it.

FORGET
+ TO: to say we didnt do something we should have done. E.g.: I forgot to lock the door.

+ ING: to talk about memories of things we did in the past.


E.g.: Ill never forget driving a car for the first time.

REGRET
+ TO: Im sorry that I have to say.

E.g.: We regret to inform that you are unable to offer you a job. + ING: I did it and now Im sorry about it.
E.g.: I now regret saying what I said. I shouldnt have said it.

BE SORRY
+ TO: apologize for something we have done

E.g.: Im sorry to keep you waiting but the lines are very busy today. + ING: apologize for something we are doing
E.g.: Im sorry for getting you up so early but we had to be there on time!

GO ON
+ TO: do or say something new.

E.g.: She introduced herself and went on to talk about her new book. + ING: continue doing the same thing.
E.g.: We must change our ways. We cant go on living like this.

TRY
+ TO: make an effort to do.

E.g.: I was very tired. I tried to keep my eyes open but I couldnt. + ING: do something as an experiment or test.
E.g.: If you want to pass chemistry, try studying together with some friends.

BE AFRAID
+ TO: unwilling to do something

E.g.: He is afraid to touch the dog in case it bites him. + ING: afraid that what is described by the ing form happens (when we are talking about things which happen to us unexpectedly)
E.g.: She doesnt want to drive her fathers car. Shes afraid of crashing it.

NEED
+ TO: it is necessary for me to do it.

E.g.: I need to work harder if I want to make progress. + ING: something needs to be done.
E.g.: The batteries in the radio need chaging.

STOP
+ TO: stop in order to

E.g.: We walked for 10km and then we stopped to have a rest. + ING: when action finishes
E.g.: It stopped raining.

LIKE
+ TO: think that something is good right to do.

E.g.: I like to get up early in the morning and go jogging, its good for my health. + ING: enjoy ( general preference)
E.g.: Mary likes going clubbing every Friday.

EXERCISE
Rewrite the sentences below, using an infinitive with to or an -ing form. a) I left school when I was only sixteen. (regret) A: I regret leaving school when I was only sixteen. b) I didnt work hard when I was at school. (regret) A: I regret not working hard when I was at school.
