Manipulative skills: Aspect 1 Process 2: Making the Basket & Gluing the Organizer

Start
Time allocation: 45 min Bend the sheet of chicken wire over a cylindrical form

Place the basket against a side of the organizer; place the strips of MDF over the edges and screw them in.

Glue the back to the bottom Time allocation: 30 min Glue the sides on

Cut out a piece of 32x16 cm

Bend the edges

Glue the middle separation in

Saw off two strips of MDF

Safety: This might be a two person job.

Glue the top on

Make three pilot holes in each

Touch up with paint where needed

Paint the strips the same color as the outside of the organizer.

Manipulative skills: Aspect 1 Process 3: Making the shelves, trays and cutting board Take one of the 166x195 mm pieces and hold it with the 195 mm side as the base Time allocation: 30 min Turn the piece around and repeat the last 3 inputs Put another mark after 52 mm then another after 6 mm Then put another mark after 6 mm Put a mark after 52 mm on the base

Aspect 2 & 3: Use of equipment and materials & techniques


Diary of Manufacture
Step 1: I drew the designs on CorelDraw, and then I put them into the laser cutter. The MDF I used has a thickness of 6 mm.

To minimize waste, the pieces should be put together as closely as possible Step 2: QUALITY CONTROL. Do the pieces fit together?

Manipulative skills: Aspect 2&3 Step 3: I put a layer of MDF sealer on both sides.

Step 4: I painted the outside of the box. The first layer needed to dry 2 hours before it could be repainted. Then I put on another layer.

Step 5: I painted one side of the other pieces white. This paint needed to dry a lot longer before anything could be done to then. Then I painted the other side.

Manipulative skills: Aspect 2&3 Step 6: Next I painted the inside of the green planks white. Step 7: Then I started on the basket. I took the sheet of wire and bended it over a cylindrical surface to form it. Then I measure out a piece of 32x16 cm. I bended the sides so that I could have a way of fastening the basket to the organizer.

Step 8: I then cut out a piece of the wire to serve as the bottom of the basket. I made it a bit bigger so that I could use the ends to fasten the bottom to the side. I turned the ends of the bottom around the underside of the other piece of wire. If this was batch-produced, a standardized format could be used. The bottom might also be melted to the side.

Manipulative skills: Aspect 2&3 Step 9: I sawed off two strips of MDF which I will need to fasten the basket to the side of the organizer. I made three small holes with a drill to guide the screws once they will be put in. I also drilled about one millimeter with a slightly bigger drill on top of the three holes. This is so that the head of the screw can be fitted in to be level with the MDF. Then I painted the strips the same green as the outside of the organizer. Safety: Caution needs to be taken with the sawing and drilling. This needs to be done by two people, one to hold the tool and one to hold the material. It is best done on a workbench in a well aired room or outside. In industry standardized strips of wood could be used to minimize waste.

Manipulative skills: Aspect 2&3 Step 10: I used the strips to screw the basket to the one of the sides of the organizer. I did this before gluing the organizer together to make it easier.

Step 11: Then I glued the planks that will hold the trays together. I used a piece of acrylic with the right measurements to hold the piece together while the glue dried. Then I painted the sides white.

Manipulative skills: Aspect 2&3 Step 12: Then I glued the organizer together. I started with the bottom plank and the back, then the sides, then the separation in the middle and then the top.

Step 13: Once it had rested and the glue had dried, I touched up the paint where needed.

Manipulative skills: Aspect 2&3 Step 14: To make the trays, I first designed them on CorelDraw. Then I used the laser cutter to cut them out. To glue them together I used liquid solvent cement.

Safety: When using the liquid solvent cement you should avoid contact with the skin and the eyes to avoid irritation.

Then I used the laser cutter to cut out 6 10x30 mm pieces of acrylic to use as handles for the trays.

Manipulative skills: Aspect 2&3 Step 15: The last component of the kitchen organizer is the cutting board. I drew the correct measurements on the laminate bamboo. My teacher helped me cut it out using the band saw. I planed the sides and then sanded them to make them smooth. Safety: Caution is necessary when using the band saw, so someone with experience can do it best.

In batch-production, large sheets of bamboo could be ordered and then cut by an industrial band saw to save time.

Strategies for testing


I will test the product against the specifications and the brief I will ask the opinions of my target audience I will do a field trial : I will find out the maximum storing capacity of my organizer and ask my target audience to rate the effectiveness of my product
