Ha sido bastante difcil saber con exactitud el nmero de deambulantes que hay en las calles de
Puerto Rico. Sin embargo en 1998, la oficina del Comisionado de asuntos municipales (OCAM)
estim la cifra en 3,191 personas distribuidas en los 78 municipios del pas. Un ao antes, la
coalicin Pro-derechos de personas sin hogar haba estimado esta poblacin en 28,794. En San
Juan se calcula que hay unos 6,000 deambulantes.
Las reas de mayor incidencia en Puerto Rico son: El viejo San Juan, Santurce, Ro Piedras,
Carolina y Ponce.
De acuerdo a la investigacin que hicieron en 1999, Mara, Julia y Hartnett, Helen P. en San
Juan, PR. Concluyeron lo siguiente:
1- 86.56% eran hombres y 13.44% eran mujeres.
2- 64.27% estaban entre las edades de 26 y 42 aos.
3- 29.65% tenan educacin de 0 a 8 grado.
4- El factor ms influyente en ser deambulantes eran problemas familiares
(79.74%), problemas econmicos (13.81%).
5- El 90.79% de deambulantes no disponen de ningn ingreso econmico.
6- El 4.97% reciben beneficios de veteranos.
7- El 9.21% reportaron recibir desde $1.00 a $498.00 de ingreso mensual.
