Well-drilling Cardinal Well Drilling (812) 332-8469 or 0495 A driven well with a sandpoint, is a oneshot(you leave the sandpoint

and pipe) deal and hard clay WILL stop you. 25' is the effective maximum pump height for suction type, at the top, pump. The deeper you have to go before you hit bedroc , the better the chances of finding a high quality aquafer. Get a geological map of PROPERTY & USES OF GEOLOGIC MATERIALS(or similar name/ fuction) from you state geologist. You can go and drill a well just using the boring bit, but it is always best to first start with the smaller pilot bit. You watch your "mud" to see what you are going through. MAKE A RECORD by the foot and the inch of what the mud tells you. Clay = no water. Sand or gravel = water(perhaps). Lots of septics around? 50' or 100'. You dig three pits with contecting canals, no need to have them bigger than 2'x 2'x 2'. The first is shallow to catch the water from the drilling, second a basin for settling, 3rd a resevour for the pump. Lignite clay mixed with water in 55 gallon barrels to ma e your "mud". 3" or 4" casing PVC is best, in some spots iron pipe can rust in 6 months if the soil is real acid. Things you need, the bits, barrel coupling for joining the drill pipe, and the swivels for the drilling rig. High strength steel drilling pipe is nice, you will get less twists and failures but you CAN do it with regular pipe if need be. Use less screen width than the height of the aquafier. The bigger the gravel the better the aquafier. "Read" your mud and eep trac of the feet and the inches. The DEEP ROCK will NOT drill through roc with out the $600 bit. National Water Well Assoc. is in Dublin,Ohio (Dayton-Columbus area) Get their reprint of Well Drilling Operation FM 5-166/AFR85-33. One point to remember, the faster you draw water from the well, the more silt and sand is washed into the area surrounding your screen. Primative well drilling. This is good only for "shallow" "surface" water, ie. watch out for contaminants. Your "drill" will be a length of say 5" steel pipe with a loop at the top (for your rope) and a opening on the side 1' or so long, say 6" from the bottom for cleaning out the impacted dirt, total length, say 4-5'. Your other item would be a tripod, made from 2x4s (or available wood) pulley for the top of the tripod, and rope for the "drill". Method of "drilling" raise "drill" to top of pulley, release rope, pull up again, release, etc. until you need to remove impacted dirt from "drill". When things get wet you can sin your PVC pipe to prevent side collapse or bail water with another 3-4" pipe with loop at top and flap valve at bottem and pray the sides don't collaspe quic ly. Remember that there are such things as poison wells that occur.
